10 Easy Health Boosters
Many people make lofty health resolutions that they ultimately can't keep because of the strain of doing everything right all at once. We think it's wiser to add one simple habit at a time to ease into a healthier lifestyle that sticks. Here are 10 simple health boosters to get you started:
1. Take your vitamins
Seriously, what could be easier? And just because we're all grown up doesn't mean our vitamins have to taste bad. Wouldn't you rather eat a gummy?
2. Laugh more
A recent study compared the strain of laughing to an abdominal workout, which releases endorphins and increases pain tolerance. Finally, a scientific reason for watching those ridiculous cat videos at work!
3. Floss your teeth
If you are only brushing, you are leaving 25% of your mouth dirty. Make it an easy habit by flossing while watching TV and keep tooth decay and other oral health issues at bay.
4. Random Acts of Kindness
We already know that doing something good for another person makes us feel happier, but did you also know that it has been linked to lowered blood pressure and reduced free radicals which benefit heart health? If you've ever been a target of random kindness, you know it inspires you to pay it forward, too. Win/win!
5. Hug
Or take it further. Totally up to you. Friendly and loving touch is associated with reducing your levels of the stress hormone cortisol and in turn boosts your immune system.
6. Sing
It's reported to be a health booster even if you are tone deaf! But on that note (pardon the pun), if you are tone deaf you should probably sing only when alone as it might cause those within earshot to release cortisol (bad) and leave immediately (good, if that means you can now continue singing without an audience).
7. Cold Water Shower
End your morning shower with a 5-second shot of cold water: it wakes you up, tightens pores, and adds shine to your hair. It may also have a beneficial effect on your immune system by carefully pushing your body out of its comfort zone.
8. Meditate
You don't have to adhere to a religious belief system to appreciate the power of meditation. Stress reduction is the obvious benefit, but it's also thought to help with certain chronic conditions and strengthening the immune system.
9. Enjoy your 8 daily glasses of water
Not everyone enjoys the taste of plain water, but it's amazing what a handful of frozen fruit or a wedge of cucumber can do to improve the taste and make it even enjoyable to stay hydrated. Do we really need to list the health benefits of drinking plenty of water?
10. 10-second Declutter
All feng shui benefits aside, taking ten seconds to clean up your desk space or one area of your house can boost your mood and maybe even unearth the runners you were planning to wear for a walk during your lunch break. It's also an opportunity to wipe up the accumulated dust and germs that you're otherwise going to pick up as you rummage through the clutter every day.
