2013 Oscars Red Carpet Recap (plus Comment to Win!)
The Academy Awards are a wrap for this year with relatively few surprises in our Oscar prediction brackets. But since we really only care about the red carpet, let's get right to it and name our picks for Best, Worst, and everything in between.
Best Dressed
Alexandra's Pick: Charlize Theron (left)
Charlize's look was much edgier than what we usually expect to see at the Oscars. Her Dior Haute Couture was a perfect blend of sex appeal and sophistication with no hint of prom fashion to be seen.
Claire's Pick: Jennifer Lawrence (right, Best Actress winner)
J. Law has been a hit on screen and on the red carpet for the last several years so no one was surprised to see her stun in this flared blush gown, also by Dior Haute Couture. She must have been plenty surprised by her win, though, tripping up the stairs to accept her trophy. Luckily the dashing Hugh Jackman was on hand to help.
Elsewhere, there was a lot of "playing it safe" in the crowd. We're pitting the next groups of celebs in trend-by-trend matchups. Here's who we thought Wore It Best:
Trend #1: Nudes & Neutrals
Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, & Kristen Stewart in blush
We realize that blush is a trending hue, but it can be devastatingly boring. While it's super flattering on Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain handily wins this pose-off in her coppery-nude gown. Does anyone else have a serious #girlcrush right now?
Naomie Harris, Catherine Zeta-Jones, & Renee Zellweger in gold
Catherine is a goddess as always, but Renee Zellweger gets the edge thanks to the pop of colour provided by the accessories (and we love that they don't match).
Zoe Saldana, Amy Adams, & Queen Latifah in white
How we wanted to love Zoe's dress, but it's just a little too busy. Queen Latifah gets our vote here for the bold lippie. Looks like Amy (and most everyone else) left the lipstick at home.
Trend #2: Sparkles
Naomi Watts, Adele (Best Song winner), & Stacey Keibler
We weren't feeling Naomi Watts' dress at first, but since we're giving her high marks for taking some risk it's enough for us to declare her a favourite.
Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, & Halle Berry
This year's ceremony celebrated 50 years of James Bond, and Bond girl Halle Berry clearly came in character. Not our top pick of the night, but such an improvement on her last few red carpet selections that we can't help being impressed.
Trend #3: Bold Colours
Jennifer Hudson, Reese Witherspoon, & Helen Hunt in blue
Helen Hunt's dress came from H&M. H&M. Some style critics poo-pooed her for it, but we're willing to bet if no one knew where she bought it they would have complimented her choice. A little on the safe side but super flattering on Helen!
Olivia Munn, Jennifer Aniston, & Sally Field in red
Red on the red carpet is usually a no-no, and now you know why. Olivia Munn's cherry red is just different and sumptuous enough that we're going to give her a pass.
Jane Fonda, Kerry Washington, & Jennifer Garner in Crayola brights
Jane Fonda is fierrrrrce, but Jennifer Garner gets our vote here. Aren't Jenn and Ben Affleck your favourite Hollywood couple right now?
Worst Dressed
Anne Hathaway (Best Supporting Actress winner), Brandi Glanville, & Marcia Gay Harden
Oh Anne, how we hate to see you on the "Worst" list! Unfortunately, we hated the unflattering darting on your chest even more (her nips even had their own Twitter account briefly). Brandi (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) has been on a continuous infotainment newsloop thanks to her feud with LeAnn Rimes and that dubious neckline gets her 15 more minutes in the spotlight. Marcia it's not you, it's the sleeves.
Melissa McCarthy, Salma Hayek, Helena Bonham Carter
Melissa, gray is not your colour and the drapey silhouette just isn't helping. Helena always hams it up for the red carpet, but she seems particularly displeased on this occasion. Salma's choker neckline earns its name, and what's up with those claw-like connections on the bust?
Now it's your turn: Who was your Best Dressed pick of the night? Tell us your vote in the comments below, and one lucky Chick will win a beauty prize!
Contest ends Sunday March 3, 2013. Contest winner will be announced during the week of March 4, 2013 and notified by email.

I like Jennifer Lawrence's dress. It was very whimsical, it had a dramatic look to it without being too overwhelming or prom like and just made Jennifer look awesome on the red carpet! | |
