5 Easy and Inexpensive Upgrade Ideas for the Home

Sometimes you just need to change up your surroundings. Inject a little life into your room or just kick it up a notch! And it doesn't necessarily mean you need an entire renovation. In fact, here are 5 simple and inexpensive upgrades for your home that can totally make a big impact:

#1 Change Up Your Knobs

Add some glamour to an otherwise boring door or chest of drawers by switching up a plain knob with something a little more glitzy. It's a little something that adds interest, fun and quirkiness. It can definitely be done on the cheap (search vintage shops or thrift stores for gems), and you don't need to be super handy either.

1. Anthropologie Croatan Knob (US$12.00)

2. Zara Home Cameo Knob (C$14.90)

3. Anthropologie Precious Stone Knob (US$128.00)

4. Zara Home Flor Knob (C$7.90)

#2 Play With Colour

Add an unexpected surprise pop of colour to ordinary objects like your lampshades, chairs, bowls or mugs. It helps breathe life into any room and is super simple to DIY with some painter's tape.

1. DIY paint dipped mugs

2. Ombre lampshade

3. Dipped wooden spoons

4. Ombre chair

5. Colour striped bowls

#3 Add a Throw or Pillow

Ali proved that some great pillows can make a space warm and inviting and totally change up the feel of the room. Add some cute throws for winter cuddling!

1. Zara Home Fantasy Pillow (C$35.90) + Plain Pillow (C$16.90)

2. Indigo Printed Scroll Throw (C$49.50)

3. Ikea Gurli Pillow Cover (C$4.99) + Valborg Cushion Cover (C$6.99)

4. CB2 Zig Zag Throw (C$59.95, on sale)

#4 Create Simple DIY Art

It's surprisingly easy and inexpensive to make art that looks like it costs a million bucks! It's a fast DIY that only takes an afternoon.

1. Vintage button letter art

2. Framed postcard grid

3. Easy painted patterns and newspaper text

4. Framed scarves

5. Ombre paint chip art

#5 Try a Trend

Metallics are a huge trend this fall and winter for fashion; Why not try to bring a little shine into your home decor? Give decorations or furniture a trendy, chic upgrade with metallic paint (you can even try metallix spray paint)! It makes even a dollar store wicker basket look super fancy and expensive.

1. Metallic striped chairs

2. Metallic dresser

3. Silver baskets

4. Metallic nutcrackers for the holidays

These are all great ideas! I need to get around to doing more DIY crafts for my home, I always see so many cute things but never get around to doing them.

A new coat of paint is always a great way to give new life to an old or boring furniture. Have done it with an old dresser and old dining chairs. :)

I love doing DIY Art with inexpensive items (i.e. scrapbook paper, patterned fabrics, etc.) because you can easily change it when you get bored with it.

I am definitely going to try redoing my daughter's dresser. It's a hand-me-down in great shape (that is, the structure and wood is in perfect condition but it's butt-ugly) and I am waffling between trying an ombre paint treatment or swapping out the knobs. Maybe both?
