5 Ways To Have The Best Thanksgiving Ever

Posted by Alexandra C. | Thursday October 10, 20137 comments

Here at CA HQ in Canada, Thanksgiving is upon us! For the chicks south of us, yes we know, we're kooky like that. But Canadian Thanksgiving happens at one of the best times of the year. The leaves have just started to turn colours and the weather is just cool enough to enjoy being outside with a nice knit sweater. It makes for the perfect background to one of the best holidays.  Good food, good company and good atmosphere. The one dampening fact for Thanksgiving? There's so much crazy work and running around that you barely get to enjoy yourself. Well, that stops here. We're on a mission to make this Thanksgiving your best yet.

Here are five tips to help you ease into the holiday:

#1 Keep Décor Simple

Cut down on decorations (and work) by sticking to one featured centrepiece that is festive and draws attention. Simplify by sticking to the season's ready-made colour scheme of reds, oranges, and browns.

1. Apples are in season, make use of them! Get crafty and learn how to make super cute apple candles.

2. Grab some craft store leaves and save yourself some table space by making a suspended centerpiece

3. Take advantage of fall produce and get creative with gourds. They're super inexpensive and look awesome in different colours or sizes. Display the gourds on candlestick holders for a dramatic look, because you're classy like that.

4. Stay simple and festive by using a wooden box as your centre piece; pair gourds with mums, coloured leaves, or fall flowers.

5. Place a collection of leaves between a table cloth and sheer fabric for an elegant look.

#2 Make Dishes Ahead

We all love to eat a massive Thanksgiving feast, but what if you're the one slaving to get it on the table? Not so fun. Don't fuss the day of, allow yourself some time to enjoy your night by making a few dishes in advance. Here are two pre-made dish ideas:

1. Sautéed Brussels Sprouts With Bacon and Golden Raisins

2. Rosemary Pecans

#3 Enjoy a Thanksgiving Cocktail

Thanksgiving is a time for family, and that means you'll need a stiff drink (kidding, sort of). Even if that's not the case, give yourself some well deserved down time with a festive cocktail. Plus, this is the perfect opportunity to drink your calories instead of eating them.

Get creative and mix yourself with these options:

1. Make use of the traditional Thanksgiving flavours like cranberry, ginger or apple and create a non-alcoholic cocktail for the youngens. We like this Apple Ginger Sparkler

2. All the flavour, in liquid form: Pumpkin Pie Martini with a graham crack rim. (image via wearenothmartha.com)

3. I love when drinks also come with a snack. This is why I love sangria. Even more when it comes with mulled wine for a unique fall taste!

OR I fully endorse cheating in this situation, make it easy and buy pre prepared cocktails, try:

1. Pre-mixed Mott's Clamato Caesar and make your own garnishes like turkey, cranberry, thyme or tomatoes.

2. Great Lakes Pumpkin Ale: Beer marries a pumpkin for yumminess

#4 Get Everyone Involved with Thanksgiving Crafts

Kids can get restless, keep 'em occupied with kid friendly crafts. You can even get the adults involved, why not? It's family bonding and handmade crafts that add a special, personal touch to your table.

1., 2., 3. Use paper plates and a few other household items for cute turkeys or use painted cups and pom-poms to make little critters too! Bring the outside in with pinecone turkeys.

4. Ask guests to write down what they're thankful for on a DIY Banner.

5. Napkin rings are a small detail that make a really adorable impact! They are easy to make with felt or paper and feel free to play around with the theme or motif.

#5 Get Creative with Your Leftovers

Leftovers are one of the best things about Thanksgiving. This year, we suggest switching it up and creating a few extra special dishes with the remnants of your feast. Or go with the old faithfuls. 'Cause either way it'll be delicious. Pie for breakfast, anyone?

What's your favourite part of Thanksgiving?

I saw that Pumpkin ale and considered it, but couldn't venture away from the cranberry vodka.
