5 Ways to Transition Your Summer Wardrobe into Fall
Each summer, I load up on a brand new wardrobe. I can't help it! There are always such gorgeous new pieces out and everything looks so pretty. This summer, there were brights and neons to be worn, summer skirts to be posed in and maxis to be shown off. Obviously, I needed everything.
The problem is, when fall starts to creep in, cold weather and all, I'm left with all my summer clothing and no way to wear it. I might as well just put it in the back of my closet for next year, right? Wrong! You can totally wear your summer wardrobe well into October. It's just a matter of layering and adding extra trendy pieces here and there. You'll also want to remember to balance out lightweight fabrics with heavier ones. Keep in mind that summer colours differ from fall ones so you also need to play around and come up with a working palette.
I came up with 5 trendy summer pieces that you probably have in your wardrobe and 5 ideas of how you can pull them off in fall.
#1 How to Transition...a maxi skirt or dress
I love the look of a boho vibe maxi with an equally boho denim top or jacket. Denim jackets are always a must have in your closet so you probably already have one stashed away but if not, I seriously suggest investing in one. They make for 'throw on anything' type jackets. As a heavier fabric, it screams cozy fall and if you aren't ready to give up on summer just yet, try going with a light wash.
1. Forever 21 Slit Empire Waist Maxi Dress (C$27.80)
2. Light Blue Floral Lining Denim Shirt (US$33.00)
3. Old Navy Denim Jacket in Light Wash (C$23.99, on sale)
#2 How to Transition...a neon top
Go with a neutral bottom when wearing a neon top. It tones the bright down and makes it a subtle pop of colour. You can also go with a neutral shoe but this fall, I'm pretty into the metallics and I think a silver shoe brings this outfit to the next level of chicness.
1. Gap Broken-In Straight Khakis (C$59.95)
2. Tilly's Pretty Rebellious Neon Womens Cold Shoulder Top (C$11.47, on sale)
3. H&M Shoes (C$59.95)
#3 How to Transition...sheer tops
Wearing a sheer top in the chilly fall weather is simple! First, you'll want to layer underneath your sheers with bandeaus or tanks. On top, I love the luxe look of a heavy, edgy leather jacket that clashes so well with the feminine sheerness of a top. Pair with jewel toned skinnies and a simple flat and you're ready to go!
1. H&M Trousers (C$29.95)
2. Zara Leather Biker Jacket with Zips on the Shoulders (C$269.00)
3. Steve Madden Favoryte Flats (US$69.95)
4. Jovonna Leopard Print Sheer Shirt (C$48.66, on sale)
#4 How to Transition...shorts
When it comes to your shorts, you'll definitely want to wear opaque or even sheer tights (pantyhose) underneath. I was all about the pattered shorts this summer and if you were as well, try pairing with solids to let your bottoms stand out. On top, try wearing with a cute and well cut blazer.
1. Zara Blazer with Gathered Shoulders (C$119.00)
2. Moschino Polka-Dot Silk Shorts (US$227.25, on sale)
3. American Apparel Opaque Pantyhose (C$17.00)
#5 How to Transition...a tank
Cardis are your new best friend. I actually wear most of my summer tanks or sleeveless tops and dresses in winter, simply by putting on a comfy cardi in fall colours. This particular tank is in a summery lilac so I went with dark, jewel toned colours in the cardi and denim to off set it. It's also in lace, and while it is more geared for summer, can totally be worn in fall. Just be sure to balance it out with thicker and more luxe fabrics (i.e. cashmere or wool).
1. Aldo Boots WONSER (C$170.00)
2. J.Crew Collection Cashmere Boyfriend Cardigan (C$278.00)
3. Talula Betty Sleeveless Blouse (C$48.00)
4. Rich and Skinny Legacy Skinny Jean (C$150.00)
What summer pieces do you continue wearing in fall? Or, which fall pieces are you most looking forward to busting out again?
