7 Weeks, 7 Summer Sun Care Tips (plus enter to WIN a $200 Beauty Basket!)
It wasn’t all that long ago when “beautiful skin” was decided by the number of hours we could log on the beach basted in baby oil. Whether sun-baked or fake-baked, the farther you could get away from your natural skin tone the better!
Sure, we knew that sunburns might give us problems later in life like premature skin aging or even cancer but we pretended not to care. There was nothing worse than not being able to show off tell-tale tan lines as a measure of the summer’s success, right?
Now we’re shifting away from bronzed beauty in favour of the more classic ideal of ageless, naturally-hued skin. Whether you have the porcelain features of Hillary Duff, the tawny tones of Jessica Alba, or cream-in-your-coffee complexion of Jennifer Hudson, the only colour we want to add now is to create expressive eyes, just-bitten lips, or a schoolgirl-shy blush.
But along with these beauty-from-the-outside-in reasons for moderating sun exposure comes this harsh reality check: in North America, one person dies from melanoma skin cancer every hour. In fact, melanoma is one of the fastest growing cancers worldwide representing 1/3 of all new cancer cases, and 1 in 7 Canadians will develop skin cancer in their lifetime – that’s 78,000 every year*.

Beauty duty fave La Roche-Posay wants to give you an extra incentive to play it sun safe this summer (and they know their stuff – their SPF 60 Anthelios XL sunscreen is the #1 selling product in Canadian pharmacies). They will be hosting a 7-week Summer Sun Challenge on their Facebook page starting June 9th. Check in every week for a new sun care tip, and if you stick with it all summer long you’ll have a chance to WIN one of five beauty baskets full of La Roche-Posay products valued at $200.
Extra bonus: try La Roche-Posay’s unique interactive Mole Checker web tool to document your skin’s health and keep track of any changes over time. 90% of skin cancers that are detected early can be cured*!

I love the pale skin look. In my opinion it is much more flattering and of course, in the long term too.
My sisters and I would use baby oil to tan with in my younger days, now I avoid it but see the same foolish thinking with my own children. My children would joke about my casper look so I use a great foaming sunless tanner. Brown spots are not worth the tan :(

My skin is covered in brown blobs at the moment, also known as sun spots. So I'm a big believer in sun protection!
This is a great idea! I'm awful at taking care of my skin come summer. This year though, I think I'll give it more attention!
I remember when the darker your tan lines were, the more you could brag about how much sun you got over the summer. And I have to admit that up until last summer, this was me. My skin tans so easily and hardly ever burns but it's still important to take precautions. I use to lay outside on a hot day for the sole purpose of getting darker. This summer, I plan to enjoy the outdoors, absolutely! But also take care of my skin with spf, including lips. Melanoma is so not worth risking for a tan. I have Bath and Body Works Strike Gold to use anyway ;)
This is cool. It gives an incentive to protect your skin from the sun. My problem is that I can never remember to reapply my sunscreen and that is like the number 1 rule to sun care. |
