Have you thought about working from home? Of course you have! (that little mix-up with the FedEx guy is totally unrelated, though)

But how?

Most successful at-home workers find themselves carrying over the habits and disciplines of a traditional workplace into their home office. It takes a great amount of discipline to successfully work from home. Establishing a routine is key.

1. Get dressed. Even if you see no one all day, working in a bathrobe or pajamas will make a person feel less professional and could eventually affect how you view your career.

2. Start the day by going out. After getting dressed and ready for the new day, it's a good idea to leave the house for a moment. Buy a newspaper and coffee, take a brisk walk, or drop children off at school or child care. This outing feels like a commute for the telecommuter and when you return home you'll be ready to work.

3. Establish goals. You should be able to clearly establish goals regarding what you want to achieve through your new work arrangement. Assess goals and revise on a regular basis.

4. Write a work plan. It's your To-Do list of things to accomplish every day. Cross completed items off to give you a sense of your progress.

5. Avoid distractions. Even if your favorite TV show is broadcast during the day, do not leave the TV on while you work. Tape your shows and watch them after working hours.

6. Set a daily schedule. As an individual working from home you should set working hours during which work is the primary task at hand. Just like when you work in an office, if a distraction presents itself, doing your job is the focus.

7. Take breaks. To avoid feeling as though you are hooked up intravenously to your laptop, schedule regular breaks. Whether you make a fresh pot of coffee or just get up to stretch, it will help you feel as though you are not chained to your desk.

8. Schedule "dates." Try to go into the office occasionally or schedule to meet friends after work. This will ensure that you remain connected even though you are working solo.
