Alexandra's Makeup Collection: What You Own vs. What You Actually Use
I've confessed this before but I am a huge makeup hoarder. It's made even worse by the fact that I love to shop and try out new beauty products. I also like to buy back ups of products that I love, 'just in case' or if I run out. And I have a tendency to purchase products 'because it's new and I need to know about it for work'. I'm excellent at rationalizing. The result of this is a sizable makeup collection with unused or long forgotten products.
While I've been trying to curb my shopping addiction by shopping in my own, existing collection, one of the things I have come to realise is how little of my makeup collection I actually (like, actually) need. I decided to take a look through my makeup collection and figure out what products I use on a daily basis and which ones I seem to have lying around for that 'just in case' day (that never actually comes).
First, here is my entire makeup collection:
I have my collection organized in small buckets and jars from the dollar store as well as one large makeup case. My larger makeup case contains the items I use most often and the small buckets contain extras of lipsticks, eyeshadows, liners and products that I might use once in a while. I would have gone through and counted everything for you ladies but, let's be real, I did not want to find out how much makeup I really had. Doing the math on how much money I had spent over the years would most likely have put me in a coma.
Now, here are the products I use on a daily basis:
It's a small haul compared to my collection, right?
It's important to note that some of these products are things I am trying out and they aren't a regularly used item (the Gosh BB Cream) and some of these are interchangeable (i.e. I will use either of the concealers). To take you through my everyday products, here is a list of my basics in order application:
Gosh BB Cream (C$22.00)
Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Dark Circle Eye Roller (C$19.99)
Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation (C$46.00)
Benefit Boi-ing Concealer (C$26.00) or Hard Candy Glamoflauge (C$6.99)
Benefit Watt's Up Highlighter (C$34.00)
MAC Sheer Loose Powder (C$29.00)
NARS Blush (C$32.00)
Physician's Formula Happy Booster Bronzer and Blush (US$19.99)
Urban Decay Primer Potion (C$24.00) Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Sin (US$16.00)
Urban Decay Urban Ammo Eyeshadow Palette (C$46.00)
L'Oreal Mono Eyeshadow - this one is an oldie and I got it on sale so I think it's been discontinued. I would recommend L'Oreal Paris Color Infallible Eyeshadow in Time Resist White (C$10.99) instead.
One liner in black and one in brown (my preferred brand changes pretty much every month and I usually purchase whatever is inexpensive)
Benefit BADgal Lash Mascara (C$26.00)
Maybelline Illegal Length Fiber Extensions Mascara (US$6.49)
Plus, I also use one blush brush and one powder brush. For my eyes, I use a small eyeshadow brush and a fluffier brush for blending.
If you want to check out these products in action (or similar products in action), head over to my Before and After article where I am wearing my 'everyday, basic face'.
As much as I'd like to say that this article has inspired me to do away with all the unnecessary products I own, I can't truthfully say that it has. I just love the process of getting ready and even if I only use a product once in a blue moon, it's fun to experiment and play around with makeup. I need some reassurance chicks, let me know if you're in the same boat.
How much makeup do you have compared to how much you use on a daily basis? Do you toss unused products or hoard them like me?

I buy skin products but maximum of them doesn't suit me so I just stop using those products. Now I have a huge collection of products.
I Agree with the point that one has tendency to buy the product that is available easily and can be most economic and effective and effectiveness can be ensured after the single use. I can see the same collection above and can make the selection to get the desired.
I have a TON of products, but like you I only use a few on a daily basis
I am a hoarder, and I have a ton of make up and cosmetic products.I am
I'm just like you, sister! Especially since I've been getting Glymm boxes (cancelled now). Sometimes I find if I had a bad day I treat myself to trying a new mascara, lip product, etc. Just makes a girl feel better, right? So the impulse, "hmm I should try this" purchases end up sitting in my makeup bag for those "just in case" days or the may upgrade to my daily makeup bag. Every once in awhile I try to clean out what I don't use and just give it away or throw it away but I usually have a hard time parting with things.... you just never know right? I should go through my collection again though. I feel like I just got brand new makeup when I find things that fell to the bottom of the bag that I've totally forgotten about!
Wow, that's a buttload of cosmetics!
Girl, I can't and don't think I want to investigate the answer of your question. Ok lets forget what I own and answer what I use? On an everyday basis, nothing. At best I wear my Smashbox BB Cream (which is ah-may-zing. Its helped diminish the appearance of past pimple spots! Need I say more?).
Alex after I read you first articular about the amount of makeup you |
