Backyard BBQ Party Ideas: Lighting and Decor
With not one, but two August long weekends soon making their way into summer, we thought it was only appropriate that we celebrate the best way we know how: with a backyard BBQ! I am convinced that the summer was invented just so we could have BBQs. Is there really anything better?
Part of the essential BBQ experience (besides the delicious food) is the decor and general ambience. Lighting is especially important. Small accent lights or candles can add warmth and comfort to your table and surrounding area. Besides lighting, simple centre pieces for the table or throw pillows add more detail and visual interest to your seating area. They add a burst of colour and help create an inviting atmosphere.
With just a few additions, you can perfect a simple but trendy and chic theme:
#1: The Rustic Garden Party: Stick with a colour palette of neutrals and earthy tones. Add fresh flowers and natural fibres. For more ideas, try our Hunger Games Inspired Party Ideas.
Gluckstein Home Suede Glacee Collection (C$11.99-39.99, assorted pieces), Rona Garden Light Basket Solar Powered Light (C$19.99), Anthropologie Bottled Garden Stakes (US$68.00)
#2: Tiki Beach: Torches, twine, bamboo and seaside colours can be used to achieve this theme. We love the idea of throwing in some 70's retro as well.
Canadian Tire Nolan Torch (C$3.74), Canadian Tire Tava Torch (C$5.99), Tiki Mid-Century Siesta Ware Polynesian Glass Set and Caddy (US$51.00), Target 2-Piece Bamboo Patio Tiki Bar Stool Set (US$99.00, on sale)
#3: Chic and Fashion Forward: Think sleek designs, geometric shapes and in trend colours for this theme. It's sophisticated without being too stuffy.
West Elm Glassware Set (C$42.32), West Elm Chevron Crewel Pillow Cover (C$41.26), Anthropologie Atrium Lantern (US$28.00-38.00)
#4: Fun and Whimsical: Go wild with textures, fabrics and colours. Neons and brights were huge trends in fashion this year so translate them into your patio décor.
Canadian Tire Solar String Lights (C$19.99), Rona Paper Lanterns (C$9.99), Urban Outfitters Pom Pom Pillow (US$24.00), Ikea Somrig Vase (C$1.99, each)
We took our own advice and put it to use. We hosted a ChickAdvisor shindig, complete with cocktails and BBQ skewers! We decided to go for a colour theme of yellow, green and blue. With a little help from the local dollar store, we found simple accent pieces to bring everything together cohesively.
Of course, we wish you Chicks could have come along but we do have the next best thing: lots of pictures!
Setting up the table. In the background, you'll also see Ali's chairs from the DIY project.
We're especially in love with the three black candle holders, they came to us courtesy of our friends at Canadian Tire.
This refreshing mint and pomegranate cocktail was delicious as a punch. Recipe to come, so stay tuned!
Miranda enjoys a glass. She's so adorable!
These umbrella lights (also from Canadian Tire) looked gorgeous when evening came and tiki torches in the background provided additional lighting for the night.
