Baking Discoveries: Donuts

A while back, we declared cake pops to be the hot new baking trend. Well, cake pops need to take a back seat because the 'it' item for all foodies is... (drumroll please) donuts!
Whether you're whipping up a batch at home (perhaps with your own mini donut maker?) or checking out a new donut shop in town, you can't deny the indulgence that is a perfectly baked donut. Plus, with the crazy concoctions and flavours that people are experimenting, long gone are the days of vanilla and sprinkles! We're welcoming in the new era of bacon and maple or pumpkin spice.
The most common decoration for donuts is glaze or sprinkles and sometimes even both. They make the donuts more decadent and of course, way more fun to eat. It almost gets to the point where you don't want to ruin them by eating them; but that is easily overcome after the first bite.

With autumn in full swing, flavours such as pumpkin spice, apple cider, chocolate peppermint and chocolate-filled cinnamon are rising in popularity. You can almost image snuggling up to a warm fireplace while taking a bite of these delicious treats!

If you've only ever known about the everyday donut flavours, take a look into the world of savoury donut flavours that may just leave you drooling! There are flavours such as avocado, cherry coconut, fruity pebbles, and even bacon maple donuts! These are only just the beginning of the list of crazy flavours.

Donuts are a great and easy snack for events such as parties or wedding receptions. They can be specialized for whatever the event is for, but the presentation of the snacks is just as important. Look at these examples of snack table set-ups for ideas on how to cater your next event that will make people wish they thought of it first!

Conventional ways of eating donuts get boring after a while. Why not try something new in one of these ideas. Try making a twisted doughnut for a slightly different take on the round doughnut. Or skewer a few doughnuts on a stick, cover them in a favourite topping, and indulge in this carnival-style snack. If you're feeling really creative, try using miniature donuts as a decoration on your coffee or other favourite drinks.

Do you have a favourite new flavour of donut? Have you ever tried making them yourself at home?

Love those evil donuts!!! I have tried the Maple Bacon... so tasty...
I'm good on all those fancy donuts, especially the bacon one (ick!). I'm super traditional, just give it to me hot and glazed (Krispy Kreme) and I'm in heaven. The most that I will deviate is chocolate covered or sprinkles and oooh chocolate covered custard filled yum!!
Avocado donuts!?? Wow!! I LOVE me some avocados, but I'm not quite sure how it will taste on a donut! I'm up for trying it though ;)
Apple Cinnamon Donuts are the BEST! haha Just a thought.
You know, I've never thought of making my own donuts before. I've baked cookies, and cakes, and brownies for special occasions, but maybe for xmas his year I'll make some mint chocolate or apple cinnamon donuts
I love donuts! Those maple bacon ones look awesome. I've been eyeing those mini donut makers for a long time, maybe I'll get lucky for Christmas!
I love donuts, but am glad my diabetes keeps me from indulging often.
I really love those mini donuts on a skewer on a drink- so cute! I would even cheat and do this with store bought donuts.
Wow. These look amazing! I have seen donut makers and donut pans (for baking donuts) but have yet to try either of them out. Could be dangerous though!
I have always wanted to try making donuts at home. I don't love donuts so I haven't yet, but hopefully one day. |
