Beauty Talk with The Bachelor Canada: How to Make a Good First Impression

When I got asked to attend the Bachelor Canada brunch hosted by Rimmel London Canada, I figured that I would be staring starry-eyed at a good looking man for an hour or so, and I was right! But I also picked up some notes from the Canadian Bachelor himself, Brad Smith. The first ever all-Canadian Bachelor had a goal (besides finding love, obviously) to break boundaries with a reality television show by making it as true to life as possible. He did not want someone else putting words in his mouth. His comment on the outcome was that this season has a realistic ending. Anyone else extremely anxious to find out what that means? However, he did say that he couldn't wait for the secret to be out so he could start talking about it!

But before we can discuss the end, we need to discuss the beginning. As he met the ladies for the first time, he had to make a good first impression. Similarly, they all had to make one with him. He used his experience with the show and shared his thoughts with us on making first impressions.

How cute is he?

When it comes to making a first impression, many people feel anxious or nervous and tend to go all out with make-up. They think it will make a more lasting impression. However, like being in Bachelor house, sometimes the dramatics are better left at home. Whether it's for a date, interview, or first day at a new school or job, you always want to put your best foot forward. Not looking worn out or tired is also key.

Rimmel London Canada's make-up artist Vanessa Jarman had said that the fresh faced look was perfect for a first date. I would take this advice and use it with other instances in which you intend on making a good first impression. The key is to be yourself, and although you probably don't want to be the centre of attention, enhancing your best features will help to make you stand out a little from the rest of the crowd. Choose one feature and use your makeup to make it pop. Bring out the eyes and they will draw in his attention as he'll be staring into them. Draw attention to the lips for a flirty look with sex appeal - and maybe he'll want to kiss them.

Skin: Fresh and balanced looking skin is a good start for the first impression makeup. Foundation, BB Cream, concealer (whatever you normally use to even out your skin tone and cover up blemishes and/or redness) and a small amount of blush to add some colour to your cheeks.

Eyes: Are you choosing to bring out your eyes? Make them pop without going overboard. Add a bit of eyeliner and mascara and you may catch him staring into your eyes a couple times. If you want to play it up a bit more, add a bit of wash eye shadow or liner to the inner corners of your eyes for some pop! No need for fake eyelashes.

Lips: For a first impression, you could go bold if you really want, as long as the rest of your face is played down. But your best bet is choosing a lip colour that isn't too vibrant. A nice pink lipstick or stain with a gloss over top will definitely draw some attention to your lips. When Brad was asked on a preference between lip gloss or lipstick, he said it did not matter to him. Also to note, he was just happy that there were a lot of beautiful bachelorettes that wanted to kiss him. Probably better to use minimal gloss so you add a little extra shine to catch his eye but it's not so much to be distracting.

Hair: You don't need to go to the salon to get a prom-like hair style to make a good first impression. Some nice beach-wavy hair can go a long way. As long as it isn't a rats nest of hair and it is brushed then you should be fine. If your makeup is simple, your hair should match.

Also remember that when it comes to perfume, a nice light scent can bring him closer, but just don't go overboard with it because he will stay far away if it's too overpowering. Another trick you could try is to use a very small amount of a scented body lotion instead.

Here are some products we recommend:

1. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner (C$26.00)
2. Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush (C$25.00)
3. YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch Concealer (C$40.00)
4. Rimmel London Match Perfection Foundation (C$11.38)
5. Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm in Pink Punch (C$4.99)
6. Rimmel London Scandal Eyes Lycra Flex Mascara (C$8.99)
7. Juicy Couture Viva La juicy Body Lotion (C$56.00)

Definitely agree with the perfume, as most men feel the need to douse themselves in cologne on a first date. As long as you don't reek of BO we don't mind a more subtle approach!!

I agree the best tip is the perfume tip. It should go for men to. Some guy's just put way to much after shave or cologne on and it makes me back away.
Great job Nicole!!

I think the best tip here is the perfume..just a little bit! Don't bathe in it, especially since if you're meeting someone for the first time you don't know if they're sensitive to scents! Also, easy on the black eyeliner. I see a lot of girls that use a lot of pencil liner and it goops up. I like liquid liner better because there's no "goop".
