For most of us, it isn't really summer without getting out of the city for a beach getaway. The trick is to find the perfect spot - sun, sand, water, and local attractions all factor into the decision.

We've done the homework for you. Our list of top-rated North American beaches is sure to find a fit for everyone and every budget.

Hanalei Bay Beach
Kauai, Hawaii, United States.

Why it’s hot: Hanalei Bay Beach, a 2 mile crescent-shaped beach, ranks number 1 on “Dr. Beach” Stephen P. Leatherman’s 2009 list of top 10 U.S. beaches. Known for its strong currents, this beach is the ultimate playground for world champion surfers. The beautiful view of the waterfalls and mountains makes this beach a best bet.

Our tip: It may not be ideal for snorkel or scuba, but there are plenty of other Hawaii-area locations that will suit.  Check with the locals for a hot tip!

Siesta Beach
Sarasota, Florida, United States

Why it’s hot: One of the most popular beaches in Florida, Siesta Beach is known for its pristine water and its soft white sand. This four mile beach has been dubbed as the “whitest and finest sand in the world” and for good reasons! Siesta Beach’s sand is 99% quartz which makes it reflective and cool to walk even on the hottest days. Its coral rock and caves are great for scuba diving and snorkelling.

Our tip:  You can grab a burger or 'dog in the area, but if you'd like something else pack a cooler yourself.  It's a bit of a hike to fancier eats.

Cooper’s Beach
Southampton, Long Island, United States

Why it’s hot: Tourists, locals and celebrities flock to Cooper’s Beach to wind down and enjoy the scenery while eating at one of the many fancy beach side restaurants. Take a sightseeing detour to the historic mansions in the area. If you're lucky, you might just bump into your favourite celebrity!

Our tip: Cooper’s Beach can get easily crowded, so get there early to avoid parking problems. Non-residents may have to pay for parking.

Caladesi Island State Park
Tampa, Florida, United States

Why it’s hot: Caladesi Island State Park is one of the premier beaches in Florida that is only accessible by boat. Ranked No. 1 by Dr. Beach in 2008, this 3-mile beach of sugary pure white sand is the ideal spot for sunbathing, kayaking and swimming. Also includes a three mile nature trail for a great outdoor hike.

Our tip: Plan carefully - Caladesi Island is for day use only, with a maximum time limit of four hours. So much to do in so little time!

Sauble Beach
Sauble Beach, Ontario, Canada

Why it’s hot: Voted as the best freshwater beach in Canada, people love its 11 km of sandy beach and the shallow water which makes it a treat for the perfect cottage getaway.  For the adventurous type, the nearby Bruce Peninsula National Park offers a hiking retreat while Fathom Five National Marine Park houses 22 ship wrecks for you to discover.

Devonshire Beach
Slave Lake, Alberta, Canada

Why it’s hot: Devonshire Beach is the site of a rare sand dune dating back 1500 years. This 7 km long beach also holds annual fishing and sand building competitions which draws tourists all over Canada. Local attractions also include Song Bird Festival and Riverboat Daze in the summer.

Grand Beach
Grand Marais, Manitoba, Canada

Why it’s hot: The beach is filled with 3 kilometres of fine, white sand. It sits on the eastern side of Lake Winnipeg, North America’s sixth largest freshwater lake. The lake and its surrounding beaches are a remnant of the prehistoric glacial Lake Agassiz.

Our tip: Hit Grand Beach with the family!  It's less an ideal location for a quiet and romantic beach getaway.

Bennett Beach
Carcross, Yukon, Canada

Why it’s hot: One of the Yukon’s best-kept secrets, Bennett Beach boasts towering dunes and two kilometres of white sand. Bennett Lake’s hard-packed sandbar drops off a kilometre from shore, which means relatively warm, shallow water, perfect for a dip in summer.

Our tip: Yukon.  Yes, really!  We have it on good authority that this is a Bucket List contender.  Enjoy the midnight sun on the beach!

Long Beach
Tofino, British Columbia, Canada

Why it’s hot: When you’re in British Columbia, Long Beach is the ultimate choice for freewheeling, Maui-style windsurfing. A visit to the beach also includes kayaking, hiking and paddling in the nearby streams. Whale watching, hot springs excursions and camping at the nearby Pacific Rim National Park are just a few popular activities at Long Beach.

Our tip: Strong Pacific winds and rainy seasons make this beach more surfer-friendly than family-friendly. Storm watching is a popular activity during the off season.
