Best & Worst Dressed: Oscar 2012 Red Carpet Recap
Last night, we were treated to an evening of glitz and glam with the 2012 Oscars. Of course we were glued to the screen watching the best (and most important part) of the Oscars: the red carpet. Because, seriously, "The Artist" winning Best Picture? Wouldn't have been my pick. However, talk to me about the fashion divas, disasters and designers of the night and I'm hooked.
Here are our top picks for the best, worst and of course, everything in between!
Alexandra's Picks: Top 3 Best Dressed
Michelle Williams, Jessica Chastain, Viola Davis
Michelle Williams shows us how to do a peplum the right way in this gorgeous coral chiffon number that flatters her figure. Jessica Chastain wore a detailed and embellished McQueen gown that was simply breathtaking and Viola Davis was born to wear this colour of green, don't you think?
Claire's Picks: Top 3 Best Dressed
Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie
Natalie Portman channels old hollywood glamour in a vintage Dior dress with a polka dot pattern we didn't expect to love this much. Gwyneth Paltrow is sleek and modern in a minimalist Tom Ford gown (the cape saves it from being merely a one-shouldered Grecian goddess reboot), and Angelina Jolie oozes confidence in her thigh high slitted black velvet number.
Honourable Mentions
Octavia Spencer, Meryl Streep, Rooney Mara
Octavia has been bulletproof this awards season, and this figure-flattering Tadashi Shoji gown was right on the mark. Meryl Streep's gold outfit was a gorgeous step up for her, and while Rooney Mara is as beautiful as ever, there's something we just can't love about this outfit.
Esperanza Spalding, Stacey Keibler, Ellie Kemper
Esperanza is a natural beauty in this simple but elegant blue gown. We're pretty sure that Stacey Keibler is the only woman in the world who could pull off a huge gold rosette on the hip, and she's working it! Ellie is red hot in this sequined number, and can we talk about her gorgeous auburn hair and porcelain complexion for a sec?
Love/Hate
Maya Rudolph, Kate Mara, Glenn Close
While the bejewelled belt and cap sleeves are adorable, Maya Rudolph's dress was one of those that wowed from behind. Then she turned around. Kate Mara's dress has this draping sleeve thingy, which distracted us from the parts we did like. Glenn Close: we love you, we love this colour on you, but the dress itself confuses us.
Cameron Diaz, Shailene Woodley, Penelope Cruz
Cameron is hot, but the dress is just too safe. Shailene's looking a little matronly, and while Penelope got the colour right... does it look a little too much like a prom dress to anyone else?
Worst Dressed
Melanie Griffith, Busy Phillips, Melissa McCarthy
There was too much texture, too many fabric pleats and bad dress styles going on with these three ladies. Don't be so busy, Busy! Melissa, lose the sleeves, and Melanie - aw Melanie. A little bling would have done wonders.
Anna Faris, Rose Byrne, Tina Fey
Anna Faris and Rose Byrne suffer the ultimate high school faux pas - maybe next time they should call each other first before showing up in the same dress. Funny gal Tina Fey's peplum is figure flattering, but dude - the colour and stiff fabric makes the dress uninspired, no?
Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lopez, Emma Stone
A-lister Sandra Bullock is way too pretty to wear a shapeless top like this. J.Lo went to the other extreme (we think Octavia Spencer won this "who wore it best" matchup), and then there was Emma Stone. No commentary required.
Milla Jovovich, Kristen Wiig, Berenice Bejo
Milla's red lip saves the overall ensemble, but on its own we find the gown not nearly original enough. Kristen Wiig and Berenice Bejo should have both taken bigger colour risks for their gowns. Nice try, ladies, but forgettable.
Missi Pyle, Melissa Leo, Livia Giuggioli (Colin Firth's wife)
Missi's dress confuses us with too many things happening here, but kudos on that bold and bright colour! Melissa's shirt dress is way too boxy for her frame. Colin Firth needs to stop making so many period movies, because it seems to be rubbing off on his wife Livia.

Oh gosh there are so many gorgeous dresses! Octavia Spencer's dress is amazingly flattering on her and its so classy. I'd definitely wear the dress Natalie Portman has on, because I'm in love with polka dots but my favorite out of all of them is the beautiful dress Emma Stone was wearing!
Octavia Spencer looks radiant in her shimmering gown. Love that`s it`s gorgeous, properly fitted and classy. So many of the looks this year left me underwhelmed. The trend of trying to look sexy is so unsexy! Natural beauty and confidence goes so much further!!

I think Octavia Spencer looked phenomenal and her dress was so flattering.
My favourite was Michelle Williams, and my least favourite was Jennifer Lopez.
Loved Gwyneth's dress, Penelope Cruz dress, and I thought Kristen Wiig looked fanastic during the show (picture above doesn't do her justice)

I liked Glenn Close's dress I thought the colour looked really good on her, the style was not any worse than Angelina's with the slit to her waist?!?
Michelle Williams looked incredible! I loved that she takes risks with color, and the brooch just mmmm-mm! Jessica Chastain looked fantastic too. I was watching Twitter and Whitney Cummings tweeted that she looked like she was wearing Jessica McClintock. I love Whitney, but that was kind of insulting in my opinion. I adore Natalie Portman, but I found the polka dots to be too informal for the Oscars. Melissa McCarthy should have stuck with royal blue and a more flattering style. That horrific peach number just envelops her. |
