Since his appearance on Project Runway Canada, designer Lucian Matis has been gaining momentum and catching the attention of the fashion industry.

This year at LG Fashion Week in Toronto, Lucian closed off the week with his earthly and organic collection “City Hunter”. ChickAdvisor had a chance to ask the Romanian-born designer about his inspirations, his latest collection, and plans for the future.

ChickAdvisor: What inspires you?

Lucian Matis: Everything inspires me; I find beauty and inspiration sometimes in the oddest of things but I must say that the shapes and colours I am most attracted to are the more organic ones.

ChickAdvisor: How did you come up with the “CITY HUNTER” collection?

Lucian Matis: After working on my previous collection “Digital Poetry" for a while I felt the need to get back to nature, the more crude shapes and colours, away from the technology. I had a vision of this earthy being, but in a more modern light. I can say that City Hunter is the outcome my re-connection with nature, going back to the basics and finding the inspiration in it.

ChickAdvisor: Who are some of your favourite designers?

Lucian Matis: Consistently? Prada. The rest of them change with each season.

ChickAdvisor: Who would you love to dress in your designs?

Lucian Matis: All the fashionable women out there that get joy from wearing unique pieces of clothing...if we were to speak about celebrities I would have loved to dress Audrey Hepburn.

ChickAdvisor: The energy surrounding your show from the media’s perspective at Fashion Week was a buzz of anticipation and celebration. How was your experience at Toronto Fashion Week this season?

Lucian Matis: My experience of Fashion Week was great. I must say that seeing the support and the great work that FDCC did this season made me feel proud to close Fashion Week. What an honor!!! The room was jam-packed and I could feel the audience’s “LOVE” in the air.

ChickAdvisor: L’Oreal Paris Hair expert Eric Del Monaco spoke so highly of you, and said he is always excited to collaborate with you. What was it like working with him again this season?

Lucian Matis: Working with Eric is always a joy. What I love about him is that he never says “no” or “I can’t do it”. We had a hard time securing the antlers on the model’s head but we did it. I was very pleased with the look. It was exactly what I envisioned.

ChickAdvisor: What do you have planned next for your line?

Lucian Matis: An irresistible and fun collection.
