Cannes 2011: Ten Best Red Carpet Hairdos
As long as the Cannes Film Festival has been held (64 years to be exact), starlets have been bringing their glamour A-Game to the 12 day red carpet extravaganza. From the film premiers in the evening, to the daily photocalls and press appearances, actresses (and the occasional model looking for an excuse to wear a pretty dress) must plan a multitude of jaw dropping looks to stand out. While we love a good gown as much as the next gal, we were loving the variety of hair looks worn at the festival, and so present to you our top ten.
10. Zoe Saldana At The Tree of Life premier, the actress went for Old Hollywood glamour, with a side-swept look of soft curls that graze her bare shoulders and strapless gown.
9. Uma Thurman One of the most photographed on the Cannes red carpet this year, the festival jury member wore every variation of updo from bun to twist to these messy braids. While her other dos were restrained and glamorous, the hair she wore at the amfAR Gala reflects Thurman's quirky, adventurous spirit.
8. Bryce Dallas Howard At the Restless photocall the actress wore a day-appropriate updo. Her loose waves were pinned back in thick twisted plaits, and we love the bright pop of her gold and green earrings against her the deep red hue.
7. Kirsten Dunst The winner of this year's Cannes' Best Actress award for the film Meloncholia, Dunst closed Cannes in Chanel Haute Couture at The Beloved premier. Her cropped, messy pony tail, proves that girls with shorter hair don't have to wear fake extensions or pieces when pinning hair up to attain glamour.
6. Elizabeth Olsen The up-and-coming actress and star of Martha Marcy May Marlene proved at Cannes that her sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley aren't the only stylish ones in the family. At the film's premier she took a risk and wore a headband, the accessory is saved from appearing costumey by the modern, loose curls pinned low on her nape.
5. Rachel McAdams At the photocall for her film Midnight in Paris, the Canadian actress had what can only be described as The Most Perfect Blow Out Ever. Thick and layered, not too much volume at the crown, a sexy middle part, the most divine blonde colour, the list of what makes it perfect is long, and we're sure plenty of ladies will be running to their stylist with this picture.
4. Aishwarya Rai The Bollywood actress wore her hair in a classic raked back French twist at the Cannes Film Festival Opening Ceremony. The simple style let the intricate bodice of her dress be the focus, and proved that it's hard to go wrong when you're one of the most beautiful women in the world.
3. Bar Refaeli The model showed up at many Cannes red carpets and wowed each time. While we loved her sexy updo at amfAR, the simple pony she wore to the Beaver premier was just as sleek as her Roberto Cavalli gown.
2. Gwen Stefani The singer and sometime actress channeled this season's '70s look perfectly without going overboard at The Tree of Life premier. Her disco curls complemented her Stella McCartney jumpsuit, and while this would be overkill on less confident women Stefani of course pulls it off. Plus, we like that she made the look her own by doing one of her '40s-style Victory twists at the front.
1. Diane Kruger We cooed over all the pictures of Kruger looking lovingly at beau Joshua Jackson at the Sleeping Beauty premier, but what kept us clicking through all the shots was her hair—from every angle new details emerged, a braid here, some pins there, and then a loose, braid-like twist at the side. It's been years since she played Helen in Troy, but she's still got hair Greeks would go to war over.

Gwen Stefani hairstyle is beautiful. I was looking for a hairstyle to wear to a 70's costume party and this is it. This would also make a pretty Christmas party look for a formal party

I want to also add that I really like Bar Refaeli's hairstyle. Her ponytail is simple, clean, classy, and sexy all at the same time. Plus you can never really go wrong with doing something like that.
I agree w/Ali, not loving Gwen S's hair, or makeup come to think of it. Her hair def' looks poodle-esque and the ends like curls topped with a layer of frizz. It's either my eyes, monitor, the camera or her makeup. I think it's the makeup. It's aging her! Especially around the eyes, she has some weird wrinkles happening there, almost looks like the after effects of botox.
@mamaluv, actually, I think Rachel McAdams looked more informal...But it could be because she's the only one in these series of pictures with her hair down.
I've always wanted to do something coiled like on Bryce, but I've never been able to get it to stay!! I can't wait until my hair grows out so I can try it again :)
I love most of these looks but I think I'm one of the few who did not like Gwen Stefani's hair. It's a bit too poodle-esque for my liking.
Gorgeous! but I have to say I'm feeling like Kirsten Dunst's hair was far too informal for the event at hand, no? Bar Refaili's pony is tidier and somehow looks more fitting.
Elizabeth Olsen's hair is amazing! I wonder how old is she?
I love Aishwarya Rai's hair. It's simple but so classic. Perfect for any occasion. |
