Chicks Get Fit: Twerking it Out at Brass Vixens
Since Miley's VMA performance, it seems to me like I can't have a single conversation where the subject of twerking doesn't come up. Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration, but seriously folks: everyone and their grandmother knows what twerking is nowadays.
Of course, there have been mixed feelings toward the dance, and I bet you've raised an eyebrow or two at the booty popping (see above). Except - have you ever considered twerking as exercise? Local fitness studio Brass Vixens (also known for pole dancing classes) hosts a twerk class so obviously, we had to try it out and see for ourselves what all the fuss was about.

So I have a weird obsession with watching twerking videos on YouTube. There is something incredible about watching a butt just move effortlessly up and down that is just... mesmerizing. (P.S. I love a good twerk out.) When I heard that one of my favourite fitness studios, Brass Vixens was offering twerking classes, I was like, 'YEAAAAAAAAHHHH'. Immediately, I bought a pair of booty shorts (not really) and made my intern Christina come with me. Cause I'm a cool boss.
Here's what you need to know about twerking: it's like, really hard. Take a regular squat or lunge, then add a booty pop and try to make it with a sexy attitude. It's a lot more difficult than you would expect it to be. And it's especially hard to make it look good. However, like my instructor said in our class, twerking is all about the attitude so with that in mind, I set out to twerk it out.
I may not be the best twerker, I am not quite on Miley Cyrus' level yet, but I think I did pretty ok for my first time. What I loved about this class was that it incorporated a little bit of cardio, some major butt lifting exercises and choreography as well. We learned individual moves and then put them all together for a mini routine. Of course, trying to be sexy while in baggy sweats, hair in a bun and using the brick wall as your audience was challenging, but I got the idea behind them and I think this is definitely an exercise I could continue practising at home. Two ladies near the front of my class had the wiggling down pat and much to my surprise, it wasn't because they were once featured in a Drake video. It was simply because they had been twerking for over a year. This made me feel A LOT better.
With the massive influx of twerk fail videos and Miley Cyrus doin' the booty pops at her shows, twerking isn't usually seen as good exercise - but I beg to differ. Try it out ladies and then bring it home! If anything, the hubby will thank you.

It's hard to deny an invite to a twerking class with your boss when a) you are an incognito twerker and b) your boss is as cool as mine. Not many people can say they went to a fitness class let alone one that involved a whole lot of booty popping and some stripper poles with their boss. Needless to say I LOVED it, and it was not your regular zumba class. I literally pumped myself up for this class by watching Nikki Minaj and Miley Cyrus music videos, I wish I was joking. When I got to the studio I put on my cheetah print leggings and crop top and attempted to feel as sexy as possible.
For the first five minutes I was getting my ab workout from all the giggling, but the instructor made it super easy to feel confident and soon I was twerking my little booty away. Let me tell you ladies, it is not as easy as it looks! There are so many different types of twerking and every single one takes butt and leg strength. Add those moves with a sexy attitude and you'll be just as good as Miz Cyrus. By the end of the class my thighs were so sore I just wanted to lay down on my mat and never get up. There were so many different skill levels in the room which makes you feel super comfortable, I would definitely recommend going with some girlfriends too for maximum giggles and girl power support!
I'd be lying if I said I didn't obsessively practice twerking every chance I get after that class . It honestly is the simplest and sexiest exercise, and your beau will definitely not mind the extra booty shaking around the house.
