DIY Craft: Jewelry Shadow Box
When ChickAdvisor member Patricia let us know about a cool way she'd come up with to show off her jewelry collection, we knew that we had to have her come in so she could show us exactly how it's done (and so maybe some of that crafty creativeness would rub off on us too)!
Patricia was lovely enough to make the trek over to CA HQ and she gave us the step by step on how to make a jewelry case out of a shadow box frame. This DIY project requires a trip to your local hardware or craft store but it isn't difficult and it looks super cute when finished.
So let's get crafting, shall we?
Step #1: Materials
You are going to need the following materials: a box or shadow box, a cork board, a piece of fabric (big enough to cover the cork board and have room to wrap a bit around the edges), a glue gun or regular glue, a pair of scissors, wooden dowels, and hook-like screws.
Tip: Try checking your local dollar store first for materials before heading out to a craft or hardware store where you might end up spending more money.
Step #2: Wrap Fabric
First wrap your cork board in some sort of fabric. A plain black fabric is a good start if you want to showcase your jewelry without distracting and crazy patterns. But also a simple patterned fabric could work as well. Using a hot glue gun, glue your chosen fabric down on the reverse side of the board.
Step #3: Corners + Loose Fabric
Cut off the extra fabric to avoid bunching at the corners and make it easier to put into the box. Glue any loose fabric to the bottom of the corner to make it look neater.
Step #4: Glue it in Box
Next, you are going to glue gun the fabric-covered cork board into your shadow box. Make sure you use enough glue to avoid it coming apart in the future.
Step #5: Ring Holders
Using the wooden dowels, cut miniature pieces off and glue into place along the bottom of the box. These will be your ring holders! You can put in as mini-dowels as you wish.
Step #6: Necklace Hooks
Put in the hook-like screws along the top of the box, making sure they stay in as you go. In the finished product you will be able to hang your necklaces on display from these hooks.
...and you're all finished!
You can create a box fairly identical to this one, or you can get more creative and do something a bit different. Try staining or stencilling your box. You can add a glass door to a shadow box by attaching a frame with hinges.

How neat is that! Thank you, I have been looking for a way to hang all my necklaces.
This is adorable, and I think it'd make a great gift for someone! Definitely going on my list :)
This is a cute idea but I would need to make about 10 boxes for all the necklaces I have. It would take up way too much room.
not a diy | |
I would do this, but I have this abstract statue-thing that I hang my necklaces on and I love it. I am not ready to part with it, but if I finally get enough necklaces that they no longer fit, I will consider making this. I especially love the one with the glass background.
