Easy French Toast Recipe
I've been cooking my way through The French Women Don't Get Fat Cookbook and accidentally made this recipe even healthier than intended. Don't you love it when that happens?
I was making chocolate creme brulee, which uses only egg yolks and had 4 egg whites left over so I substituted full eggs for egg whites here but it didn't alter the flavour at all. Here is the recipe with my tweaks:
Ingredients
4 Slices Brioche or Thick White French Bread, cut 1 inch thick
6 Teaspoons Milk
1/4 Teaspoon Cinnamon (even better if you can grate a fresh stick)
Pinch of Nutmeg
1 Teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract (you can use the fake stuff but it's better pure)
4 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
4 Eggs (or just use the Egg Whites)
Whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg. Lay the bread in a baking dish and cover with the mixture. Let it stand for as long as you can. 5 minutes will do the trick, but you can also store it overnight like that in the Fridge.
Heat 1 Tsp of butter in a pan and grill the bread on each side on medium heat until it is golden brown. If you have saturated it over night, it may take a little longer to cook because it is more saturated. Continue on with each piece.
Serve on top:
Pure Maple Syrup
Fresh Strawberries, Raspberries or Peaches
Fresh Whipped Cream or Cottage Cheese(optional)
Serves two
