Fall 2012 Trends to Jump On Now

Last summer, floral printed pants were the 'it' denim trend. I loved the look on other ladies but was too apprehensive to try it out myself, so I shied away from it. Before I knew it, the floral denim print was anywhere and everywhere and the trend, while still being so very cute, was a bit tired. Then fall hit and floral didn't exactly fit the mood. I was left sad and floral-less. I totally missed out on the trend!

What I'm getting at here chicks, is that when a trend that you love comes along, you take that trend and you wear it! No matter what, you hold onto that trend like nobody's business! Ok, so that's a bit dramatic. The point is that if you shy away from a trend, you miss out on it and who knows, maybe you look killer in floral denim and now you'll never find out! This fall, in an effort to prevent this from ever happening again, I came up with 5 fall trends that you need to try out before they're gone. So get out of that comfort zone and throw on some of these 'hot in the moment' styles!

#1 Prints: Many people are nervous about experimenting with prints. The easiest way to get into one is to try a printed blouse, sweater or top with a solid bottom. Once you get used to that, try expanding to more eclectic or quirky prints or even a patterned trouser.

Style Tip: Try out a sleek, cropped trouser before the weather gets too cold!

1. Jacob Oversized Plaid Cropped Pants (C$89.00)

2. Kenzo Yellow Alpaca 3D Knit Top (C$260.00)

3. Top Shop 3/4 Sleeve Toile Print Shirt (UK$38.00)

4. J.Crew Collection Golden Paisley Pant (C$378.00)

5. Old Navy Short-Sleeved Sweaters (C$15.00, on sale)

#2 The Peplum: I was always freaked out by the peplum shape, especially being a curvier lady. But, I recently tested one out and was surprised by how much I loved it! I'm a total convert. There are a ton of different peplum shapes and styles out now (asymmetrical, wide or narrow). The trick is to shop around and see which one works best for you.

Style Tip: Brocade, damask and gold are huge fall trends inspired by Dolce and Gabana's fall 2012 runway show. Use a touch here and there in your wardrobe to pay homage to the collection!

1. Forever 21 Sleeveless Peplum Dress w/ Belt (C$27.80)

2. Zara Printed Pencil Skirt with Frill (C$79.90)

3. Miss Selfridge Nude Peplum Mini Skirt (UK$26.00)

4. Miss Selfridge Scroll Print Peplum Dress (UK$42.00)

5. A Wear Contrast Lace Peplum Top (C$78.77)

#3: Ankle Boots: Instead of knee highs or thigh highs (in style a few seasons ago), the ankle boot is having a particularly lovable moment! A bonus is that they look great with skirts, dresses or pants.

Style Tip: Try out some western influenced ankle boots this season. Think cowgirl chic!

1. Aldo Frosacc Boot (C$110.00)

2. Hush Puppies Revive Chukka Boot (C$150.00)

3. Burberry Prorsum Leather Ankle Boots (US$795.00)

4. Free People Jordana Platform Heel (C$281.75)

5. Top Shop Mighty Black Leather Zip Boots (C$80.00)

#4 Oxblood (Burgundy): Burgundy (or oxblood if you're feeling fancy) was all over the runways and is even the 'it' colour in makeup too. It looks great on any skin tone and can be worn on bottom, top or even as an accent colour.

Style Tip: While summer is a popular season for sheers, fall and winter are great seasons to go for heavier, luxe fabrics. This fall, why not try an old school corduroy pant?

1. Zara Guipure Top with Opening at Back (C$99.90)

2. Forever 21 Ponte Knit Blazer (C$35.80)

3. J Crew Toothpick Ankle Cord (C$118.00)

4. Rebecca Minkoff Mini M.A.C. Clutch (C$225.00)

5. H&M Sweater (C$29.95)

#5 Leather Look or Faux Leather: Nothing says 'check me out' like some edgy and dangerous looking leather! Don't be afraid of it though, there are a few different ways to incorporate leather into your closet that aren't scary at all! If you really want to go for it, I suggest trying out a leather legging - hot!

Style Tip: Leather is a brash statement as well as a controversial one. Thankfully, there are many faux options you can try so you don't have to miss out on this trend. If you're feel iffy about it style-wise, try it out in a garment that has only accents of it; in sleeves or on a lapel, or panels of leather in a dress or blazer.

1. H&M Faux Leather Trousers (C$39.95)

2.
Forever 21 Coated Collar Blazer (C$33.80)

3. Vero Moda Leather Look Pleated Mini Skirt (C$52.52)

4. Danier Dress (C$299.00)

5. Zara Faux Leather Sleeved T-Shirt (C$29.90)

What fall trends will you be trying out? Do you have a trend you were too scared to wear and now regret not trying?
