It’s almost Fall, and while it no longer means the excitement of back-to-school shopping for most of us, it does bring a new slew of trends that leave us salivating at the windows of our favourite stores, and making us wish Mom would still taking us shopping for that perfect September outfit.
Wishing really might be all you think you can afford, with the state of the world economy. But fret not - your Fall wardrobe can be as fabulous as ever!
These days, women are increasingly apt to boast about a deal they found at a chain store rather than swing the latest handbag from the European runways. Earn your bragging rights by seeking out your best Fall wardrobe yet, with minimal research, a splash of creativity, and just a little bank.
First things first –decide what your budget is. Be creative – try to spend just $200 and see how far it stretches! Then try these 7 ways to have your ultimate Fall wardrobe for less:
1. Alter it!
Snap up those items you’re hanging on to that just aren’t fitting right. Visit your local seamstress and have them nip/tuck that too-big blazer and include a fun, striped lining at the cuffs – roll the sleeves, wear it open, and voila – boyfriend blazer to boot (and no need to actually steal from your boy toy) at a minimal cost.
2. Log on to eBay!
Chances are a specific piece you’re looking for can be found for less on eBay. Keep in mind the most trusted sellers appear first, and many have made a name for themselves selling designer duds at appealing prices.
3. Seek out the capsule collections/designer partnerships
Target started it all in the US – high end designers lending their talent to more accessibly priced clothing lines. Visit H&M;and Gap for their latest designer capsule collections and score a conversation piece or two for your wardrobe. Or check out PURE Alfred Sung at Zellers – the long standing Canadian fashion icon has created a line for women, all priced under $40.
4. Hold a clothing swap!
Jenny’s fantastic black bubble skirt has seen its day in her closet, but it may be ready for a foray in yours. Organize a swap with your girlfriends and score a whole new wardrobe for nothing!
5. Head to your hometown
Time and again, I’ve witnessed fantastic finds from small town Winner’s stores. Above-the-knee-boots maybe don’t play a regular starring role in Ancaster, so they’re ready and waiting to be snapped up by an urban fashionista.
6. Play fashion editor, and hold a styling session!
Taking a page from your favourite fashion spreads, try to best emulate the styled outfits by pulling from your own closet. Be creative! Lay out your styled outfits on your bed (include a necklace hanging around a hanger, and bangles to the side and all!), snap a photo of each outfit, and you’ve got your very own look book. Who even needs to go shopping with these new outfits?
7. Stock up on beads, bangles and bows
Accessories can truly change your entire wardrobe. Simply hit Aldo Accessories, The Bay, H&M;or Forever 21’s accessory sections and literally pile on those bangles. Check out a local market or bead store, and scour for those accessories nobody else can possibly have! Snag a statement necklace and every top takes on a different persona.
