Glam Guide: How To Wear Sequins & Sparkles
Dazzling your wardrobe with sequins and sparkle is a great way to create a new look -- but especially here, keep in mind that less is more.
Melanie Lyne Crystal Bead Bracelets C$25-28, Zara Leather Sequined Dress C$139, AE Solid Tights US$12.50
Do pick one statement piece and mix it with more subdued separates; Don't wear sparkles head to toe. “If you are wearing a sequined dress, opt for accessories and outwear that is of a different material, such as a dark satin clutch or a faux fur shawl,” says Anna Mattiuzzo, spokesperson for Laura Canada.
Danier Leather Blazer C$129 (sale), Mossimo Layering Cami US$6.98 (sale), Elie Tahari 'Cindy' Lace Trim Sequin Skirt US$398
Sequins look chic and deliver the most impact when worn with items that serve as a backdrop to the glamourous effect. If you opt to wear a sequined dress, or a sequined tank and pants, pair your looks with shrugs, coats or accessories that are less decorative, more muted.
Forever 21 Bangles (set of 15) C$12.80/US$10.80, ShopRuche Sequins & Stardust Plum top US$26.99, GAP Always Skinny JeansC$59.50/US$59.50
Do experiment and have fun. The trend is how sparkles and sequins are worn now: for day, for evening, mixed up and “roughed” up. Combine with jeans, wear a touch (such as a cami) under a suit jacket, or wear with leather. Expect the unexpected.
7 For All Mankind Straightleg Dark Rich Sateen US$178, Charlotte Russe Sequin Boyfriend Jacket US$44.50, Banana Republic Colette Swirls Tank US$49.50
“Everyone can wear some version of this trend. As with all fashion, body type, shape, age and lifestyle enter into just how this trend will compliment and enhance any individual,” says Robin Keeler, Yorkdale’s Fashion Director.
BCBG Faux Leather Leggings US$168, Mango 'C'est pas vrai' tank US$32.76 (sale)
When creating an outfit, keep in mind that sequins catch the light and draw the eye. Do avoid wearing a sequined tank if you don’t want attention drawn to your upper torso. Opt instead for sequined accessories, such as a clutch or opt for a sequined ballet shrug.
So own it: personalize it, reinterpret it, and, most of all, wear it with conviction. Sparkles and sequins are the statement – everything else needs to take a back seat.

Sequins look so pretty but I never wear them because they make me feel cheesy. I really adore the leather leggings in this article though.
Thanks for the tip Oendrila!
Uh oh. Looks like I've backed myself into a corner.
Can't wait to see Ali's sequenced top! ;-)
Thanks for the excellent tips, Oendrila!
To me, holiday dressing has always meant sparkle, shiny and festive! For years however, I avoided sequins because as a curvy girl, I thought that so much sparkle would emphasize all of my wobbly bits. Curvy girls, if you sympathize, then listen here! This season, fashion taught me that looking fabulous in sequins is all in the styling, and that strategically wearing sequins can actually make me look slimmer and proportioned (YAY!)
I second that!! | |
I therefore make a motion that you wear it tomorrow and make a Posing Wall appearance. Who will second the motion?
I have the sparkliest sequins top I bought in Argentina that I haven't had the guts to wear here yet. The sequins are pretty big and they make noise when I move. Love it!
Cathy, I'm sure there's nothing on earth others look forward to than getting blinded by sequins on a sunny day! |
