Happy Canada Day: Top Ten Most Stylish Canadians

Posted by Alexandra C. | Friday July 1, 20113 comments
In honor of Canada's birthday on July 1st, we are counting down the ten most stylish Canadians. Being named one of our most stylish is no easy feat—living in Canada you have to contend with our (at times) extreme climate, rocky terrain, and you have to be able to transition from down home country to city chic depending on your postal code. Here are the worthy men and women, we are proud to call the most stylish Canadians.

1. Jeanne Beker
As if you could leave Jeanne Beker off this list! At almost 60 years old Beker is a powerhouse. She's a writer, a television host and a recent fashion designer, her line Edit sells at the Bay. Beker has amazing taste but what really makes her stylish is her ability to act perfectly down to earth after hobnobing with fashion's elite.

2. Suzanne Rogers
Yes, Rogers of your cellphone bill. I might catch of bit of flak for this one but hear me out, Suzanne Rogers was recently featured in Toronto Life's 50 Reasons to Love Toronto issue, where they showcased her outfits at various events. Looking at her ensembles, it's clear that Rogers is brazenly confident—she wears whatever she darn well pleases! She may border on OTT (over the top) but without the few that think outside of the box, where would we be?

3. Tommy Ton
You'd think that a young, polite Canadian would get eaten alive in the fashion industry but charming Tommy Ton is every editors' darling. His blog, Jak & Jil illustrates his ability to capture exactly what his readers love and want to see in a creative way, which makes him stand out from all the other bloggers. Ton always looks the part while staying true to himself and his roots. Plus, he is just so adorable!

4. Emily Haines
Emily Haines, lead singer of the band Metric has risen to stylish Canadian status over the past few years. It doesn't hurt that she's beautiful and has a model-like body. She plays around with fashion and pulls anything off effortlessly. Haines' ability to jump around on stage while wearing lamé, leather and sequins gives her style cred in my book.

5. Anita Clarke
Toronto blogger Antia Clarke of I Want - I Got has a killer wardrobe. She mixes unexpected pieces together to create something wholly unique. What really defines style, is the personality behind it and Anita has loads. While she is always fashionable, she doesn't always follow the fashion trends, she does her own thing and readers eat it up.

6. Drake
From Degrassi's wheelchair bound Jimmy to the infamous ground-breaking rap star. Sometimes style is about change and no one has done a better job of reinventing themselves than Drake. Since shedding the glasses and dorky hair cut, Drake has adopted a uniform of sophisticated suits, sunglasses and hats, and he’s even rumoured to be hooking up with Rihanna. Drake is living proof that a haircut can truly change your life.

7. Measha Brueggergosman
Measha Brueggergosman owns it, whatever 'it' is. As an opera singer she has won numerous awards and toured internationally. Her trademark is her hair, a curly afro that lends flair to her style. Like her voice, she tends to go big or go home, often wearing statement jewellery. Bueggergosman has even appeared on Project Runway Canada. Though she may not have the easiest name to spell, her voice, face and style are anything but forgettable.

8. Dean and Dan Caten
Dean and Dan Caten, designers of DSquared2 have supplied the push Canadian fashion has needed in the past few years. They've brought Canadian fashion to the international forefront by dressing celebrities like Fergie and Britney Spears. They host their own radio program on SiriusXM and have been inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. Take two parts camp, one part glam and edgy and one part flamboyant, mix it up and you get a DSquared2 cocktail of style.

9. Shenae Grimes
In terms of influence, I do have to say that Shenae Grimes is one of the most stylish Canadians. Constantly pictured in tabloids and on websites like Perez Hilton, Grimes is always in the public eye. She tends to dress casually on the street—she always has a cute cardi or beanie hat on and favors leather jackets. Recently, she has been attending more runway shows and events so I'll give her props for broadening her style horizons. What I would really like to see is Shenae wearing Canadian designers on the red carpet, she has the power to give a shove to some deserving indie labels.

10. Jay Manuel

Make up artist, entrepreneur, designer, television host, photographer, model—is there anything Jay Manuel can't do? Always impeccably tailored, he is also one of the best looking men, like, ever. His silver hair gleans and his cheekbones seem like they could cut glass. His fall debut collection for Sears Attitude was shown at LG Fashion Week to an excited crowd, though his collection is decidedly less fashion-y and more girl next door-y. He designed for the every-woman, something I think we can attribute to his Canadian roots.

Leave us a comment and let us know who your favourite stylish Canadian is!

We're taking the day off to celebrate Canada's big day, so we won't be at HQ, but can't wait to catch up with you on Monday! To our friends in the US, happy July 4th!
