Happy Easter! 5 Facts About Chocolate

Happy Easter to all our Chicks! We hope you enjoy the weekend with family and friends. We'll likely be stuffing chocolate in our faces at some point this weekend, so we compiled these facts to make us feel better about the massive quantities we'll be consuming.

1. "The chocolate tree’s scientific name, Theobroma cacao, comes from theobroma, or ''food of the gods’’ in Greek and cacao from the Olmec word kakawa." -The Telegraph

Hey if the gods ate it, then who are we to say no?

2. "Switzerland is one of the top countries when it comes to chocolate consumption. The Swiss eat roughly 22 lbs of chocolate per person per year. The U.S. consumes about 11 lbs per person each year." -Nutrition Fitness Life

So if we eat one pound of chocolate for the next 10 days, we'll still be less than the average American, right? Wait, that math doesn't sound right, or does it? Let's just say it does.

3. "Dark chocolate has been identified as high in Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. ORAC is a method of measuring antioxidant capacity, and has been applied to vegetables, spices, fruits and berries. There is a high correlation between high antioxidant capacity and the free-radical theory of aging - meaning foods high in ORAC help combat the effects of aging due to free-radicals. In every 100g of dark chocolate there are 13,120 ORAC, compared to 5938 in one cup of strawberries or 13,427 in a cup of blueberries." -Purdy's

So if we cover strawberries in chocolate, we're pretty much going to look 18 again, right? Thought so.

4. "Chocolate contains serotonin, phenylethylamine (the so-called ''love chemical’’) and endorphins which, it is claimed, can relieve pain, reduce stress and reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Unfortunately, the beneficial chemicals come wrapped in a thick coating of sugar and (often) dairy fat, the negative effects of which more than outweigh the chemical upside." -The Telegraph

Hmm, we got distracted by how happy and unstressed we felt unwrapping this chocolate foil egg and only caught the first part of that...

5. "A dark bar, with its high cocoa-to-sugar ratio, may actually discourage tooth decay and lead to fewer cavities and whiter teeth." -Purdy's

We look forward to a dark chocolate tooth bleaching kit to review here at ChickAdvisor.

Have a great Easter everyone!

Agreed. I was considering a post-Easter chocolate clearance sale binge and had almost convinced myself of the wrongness of that thought, but now feel completely justified in doing so ;)
