Holiday Jewel-Tone Makeup Tutorial (plus Enter to Win!)

Fall 2012's colour palette is all about jewel tones - sapphire, emerald and lush burgundy - and we saw plenty of that during our recent surprise makeover at Fairview Mall. You might assume these shades in fashion wouldn't translate easily to beauty, but you'd be wrong. Surprisingly wearable, these colour combos will be perfect for your upcoming holiday soirees.

We enlisted our friend Alyssa to help demo our smoked-out brash glam look.  Here's how we did it:

Step 1: After priming your eyelid, apply a creamy black base. Try using an eyeshadow stick or any product that can be easily smudged.

Step 2: Use a small eyeshadow brush and continue smudging the black cream shade along the outer corner and lower lash line.

Step 3: Starting on the outer corner, pat a sapphire blue shadow heavily onto your lid. You'll be blending afterwards so no need for extra clean lines.

Step 4: In the middle of your lid, pat on an emerald green shadow.

Tip: Choose highly-pigmented shadows for best results. Don't be afraid to layer it on to get the desired effect.

Step 5: Pat on an amethyst purple shadow starting on the outer corner just above the blue and green colours. Bring it out into a small V shape on the corner.

Step 6: Take the shadow all the way into and just above your crease. Blend all the colours together to avoid any sharp lines.

Step 7: Using a small eye shadow brush, sweep purple shadow over the black liner on your lower lid.

Step 8: Apply a silver shadow to highlight in the inner corner and the tear duct.

Step 9: Fill in brows with your usual brow pencil/powder.

Step 10: Apply foundation as you normally would.

Step 11: Apply concealer as needed and a highlighter on the upper cheekbone.

Step 12: Use a delicate blush to contour and add colour.

Step 13: Add a coat or two of mascara.

Step 14: For your lips, use a pink or neutral gloss. You want a sheer wash for a little definition but not competing with your bold eyes.

The Final Look:

I like to use more noticeable make up for the holidays, red lips, smokey eyes, just a smidgen more effort :p It is the holidays and there are usually pictures being taken to be sent out to all the relatives.

A nice mix of Classic and Glamazon is how I role during the holidays. For me, it really depends on the occasion!

For the family Christmas parties and work events, I love a red lip and softly smoked eyes.
For a night out on the town, skating with my beau, I love glittery eye shadows and glossy lips.

Makeup is so much fun!!

I would normally go classic and low-key over the holidays but for a New Year's look, I would definitely try out a jewel-toned palette such as this!

As I get older, I tend to want to play it classic and low key--but I will always add a little bit of spark--that cobalt eyeshadow would look great as a liner!

Personally I don't like the colors. Maybe not for me anyway. Whenever I wear dark colors (any purples, blues) I look like I got punched in the face and have a black eye.

I usually go classic and low-key, but with these new ideas I definitely think I might try to GLAM it up!
