How the G20 Will Affect You

I posted this in our forums so we can all complain about it together, but for those of you who haven't seen this, I have the scoop on what will be happening in 'the zone' and how it will affect those living and working there. The following is the notice we got from our property managers:

- Police presence will be on every street corner and as you pass through those areas you will be stopped and questioned. Carry ID with you. Your travel time to and from work (even on foot) will be greatly increased.

- Union Station will have restrictions to normal pedestrian flow in and out. Planned impacts to service include the 6 Bay, 72A Pape and 320 Yonge bus routs, which will include diversions in the downtown core. The 97B Yonge bus and 503 Streetcar routes will be on diversion on June 25 only. As well, both the 509 and 510 streetcars will not be stopping at Queens Quay station; it will be closed June 25-27.

- Local streets and highway closings - expect traffic delays between Friday June 25-Sunday June 27. There will be temporary traffic stoppages as dignitaries arrive and leave the city. You can get traffic updates at www.g8-g20isu.ca and at 680 News.

- Personal shopping - Do NOT purchase items, groceries, etc the weekend of the summit. Police could search your packages as you pass through each security checkpoint area.

- Cell phone use - you may experience problems with cell phones as air wave signals will be blocked periodically.

Bottom line: It's not going to be fun for anyone in the city during this time so if you can, use this as an excuse for a weekend getaway!
