Through all the trial and error, we've all come across a hard truth: if you have bad beauty habits working against you, no product is going to give you the result you want. Give yourself and your beauty routine a fresh start by breaking these five bad beauty habits stat!
Bad Beauty Habit #1: Touching Your Face and Picking At Spots
Ladies, I know it's super tempting to squeeze a zit the minute it appears, but this is a skin sin that leads to bigger problems. When you pick at pimples your skin becomes red and inflamed, and you risk spreading bacteria which can worsen the spot or lead to more pimples. Pimples suck, but do you know what's worse? A nasty skin infection, and/or a nice red scar to remind you of a pimple months after it's technically gone.
How to break it:
Hands off! Seriously, keep your hands away from your face.Your hands naturally have oil on them and adding dirt and bacteria to the mix is recipe for a skin disaster. Wash your hands regularly, and consider keeping a travel sized bottle of hand sanitizer at your desk or in your purse. Try an acne spot treatment along with a skin tone corrector to banish existing spots and marks.
Damage Fix:
1. Bath & Body Works PocketBac Sanitizing Hand Gel (C$1.75)
2. Lancôme DreamTone Ultimate Dark Spot Corrector (C$110)
3. Neutrogena Naturals Acne Spot Treatment (C13.09)
Bad Beauty Habit #2: Sleeping with Make-Up On
Sleeping in make-up happens to the best of us, but making a habit of it can have horrific results (click here if you need to be scared straight). Your skin uses your precious sleep hours to recover and rejuvenate from daily stresses. When you hit the sheets without washing your face, make-up, dirt, and oil clog your pores and mess with the skin's natural healing process.
How to break it:
Take a few extra minutes before bed to get your make-up off and I promise your skin will thank you for it. Try an oil cleanser to effortlessly remove even water-proof make-up, without harsh scrubbing. Keep make-up removing wipes beside your bed stand for days when you're too tired to move from your sheets. If the deed is already done, pick up a detoxifying mask to clean out your pores.
Damage Fix:
1. Neutrogena Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Cleansing Wipes (C$10.99)
2. The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil (C$16.00)
3. GlamGlow Supermud Clearing Treatment (C$69.00)
Bad Beauty Habit #3: Frying Your Stands With Heat
Blow-dryers, flat-irons, and curling wands heat your strands into submission, but can leave you with long term damage. Over-heating your strands leads to dry and frizzy hair with split ends galore.
How to break it: Give your hair a break; use dry shampoo to save your strands from frequent heat by stretching time between washes. When it's time to shampoo, follow up with a deep conditioning mask treatment to give your hair some well deserved extra moisture and TLC. Always style with a heat protection product to help prevent future damage.
Damage Fix:
1. Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo (C$20.00)
2. Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment (C$50.00)
3. Pantene Heat Potion Serum (C$8.99)
Bad Beauty Habit #4: Not Hydrating Enough
Hydration is key to your overall health; you need to drink roughly eight glasses of water a day to keep your body properly hydrated. Symptoms of dehydration include dry flaky skin, dark circles, and acne - not pretty!
How to break it:
Keep a reusable water bottle at your desk so you never have to go thirsty. For extra hydration throughout the day, keep a facial mist nearby - a quick spritz will keep skin looking dewy and fresh. Lastly, for extra glow, add a moisture mask to your skin care routine.
Damage Fix:
1. Lush Take Back The Tap Reusable Water Bottle (C$12.95 and $5 from the sale of each bottle will be donated to your choice of one of three charities)
2. Fresh Rose Marigold Floral Water (C$44.00)
3. Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask (C$38.00)
Bad Beauty Habit #5: Taking In Too Much Sun
UV rays are our skins biggest enemy. Sun damage can lead to dark spots, wrinkles, and at its worst, melanoma.
How to break it: Use SPF daily. SPF is a must have in the summer months, but to keep your skin looking its best, sunscreen should be part of your beauty routine year round. The new ultra-fluid lotions are extra light and leave a smooth, non-greasy base for make-up. If you're a multi-tasker look for a foundation or tinted moisturizer with added SPF.
Damage Fix:
1. Ombrelle Face SPF 60 Ultra-Fluid Lotion (C$19.99)
2. Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30 (C$27.99)
3. bareMinerals SPF 30 Natural Sunscreen (C$35.00)
