Look of the Day: Makeup for Glasses

Moment of truth: I don't actually need glasses. But, I do love the look of them. When I put on my geek chic specs, I feel totally transformed. They totally change the way my face looks and it's so much fun to play dress up. I'll admit it: I totally envy you bespectacled chicks out there.

However, the one thing I don't envy is the fact that it can be hard to design a flattering and practical makeup look that meshes well with your glasses. Then again, there's nothing like a good challenge so we did some research and we came up with a few tips and tricks for wearing makeup with glasses. Then, we put them all together into a basic, everyday look.

P.S. If you're a non-glasses wearer, you can totally use the same makeup look too, by the way!

Face and Lips

Having glasses on your face, you want to avoid any makeup that is going to promote oil build up. When you touch your face/glasses, the dirt and oil already on your hands makes a recipe for acne. Go with a mattifying, shine free foundation and be sure to set it as well (with mineral powder or spray).

Your under eye area is amplified and will be prominent so be sure to lighten and brighten any dark circles. You can bring the highlighted area down towards the apple of your cheek, but avoid any product that has too much shimmer.

For your cheeks, we like the idea of using a matte blush and if you're going to use bronzer, we suggest the same thing. I really love playing up my cheeks when I have glasses on, so using shades of lighter and darker powders or setting a cream with a powder will help with contouring.

When it comes to your lips, you can pretty much go wild. We included some of our current favourite products and colours here. In my own look, (I used number 8) I went with a bolder colour because I used neutral eye colours.

1. Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen (C$48.00)
2. L'Oreal Magic Lumi Concealer (US$12.95)
3. CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor (C$8.99, on sale)
4. Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color (C$12.00)
5. The Body Shop Lily Cole Collection Lip and Cheek Dome (C$15.00)
6. Cargo Matte Bronzer (C$26.00)
7. L'Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Lipcolour (C$12.99, available July 2012)
8. Sephora Cream Lip Stain (C$14.00)
9. L'Oreal True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Foundation (C$18.99, available July 2012)

Eyes and Eyebrows

Brows, brows, brows. I can't emphasis enough how important a strong brow is for glasses gals. They will help balance out your glasses and help to frame your face. My brows are already dark but I lightly touched them up with a dark brown pencil

Open up your eyes even more by applying a white or a nude coloured eyeliner on the lower waterline. Apply a black or dark coloured liner on your top lid to emphasis your eyes. I also applied some on the bottom, close to my lash line. Next, like always, apply a few coats of mascara. If your lashes get in the way of your glasses, use a curler as well.

On your lids, try using minimal glittery or metallic shadows and opt instead for mattes. You don't want too much sparkle and reflection competing with your glasses. I used the matte brown shades from (1) and I for a highlighter in the corner of my eye and brow bone I used (8).

1. Quo Eyeshadow Palette in On The Beach (C$20.00)
2. Too Faced Matte Eye Shadow Collection (US$36.00)
3. L'Oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Black Lacquer (C$11.99, available July 2012)
4. Sephora Flashy Liner Waterproof Eyeliner in Flashy Silver (C$10.00)
5. Anastasia Brow Powder Duo (C$29.00)
6. L'Oreal Infallible Lacquer Liner 24h Eyeliner (C$12.99, available July 2012)
7. Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color in Golden Vanilla (C$7.50)
8. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color (US$21.00)
9. Rimmel Professional Eyebrow Pencil (C$5.99)

I've been wearing glasses since second grade so I'm always looking for tips on how to draw attention to my eyes behind the frames! Great tips, thanks!
I would also add that if you have any bags under your eyes, invest in a good concealer to brighten them up. I find that any darkness is emphasized by the shadowing caused by your frames. Also, pick eyeshadow colours that compliment your frames!

I wear glasses to drive or for looking at things in the distance so it is hard to set my make-up for the glasses off and on look. Something to think about. Thanks
