MAC's New Collection Sparks Controversy

MAC recently teamed up with New York fashion label Rodarte, for their 2010-11 Fall/Winter Collection. The line of make-up products was inspired by Rodarte’s fashion line inspired by the Mexican border town of Juarez.

The colours in the collection were meant to highlight the desert beauty of the town; however, the town is notorious for its high-level of rape and murder of young women and girls. Consumers were offended by the names of the products in the collection like Ghost Town and Juarez.

MAC and Rodarte have both released official statements that they did not intend to offend anyone and that they do not take the issues in Juarez lightly. MAC will be changing the product names, and has committed to donating $100,000 to a non-profit organization that is helping the women in Juarez.

Do you think MAC handled the controversy well? Or should they be doing more?

one more thing...I'm loving the colors of the products.

Although I think it's an honor for a town to be recognized and have products named after it, MAC should have really researched more into the town's history. More importantly, if that's not the case and they did know, MAC could have thought about the sensitivity of what the names could mean to the community and what they are dealing with. Rape and murder should never be glorified in any way nor be taken lightly. However, I think MAC made the right decision to change the names and handled the situation well.

I wondered if they considered the possibility of people objecting to the names before lauching the collection or if it was truly an oversight....

Either way it sounds like MAC handled the situation with tact.
