A vibrant red lip is a timeless, universally flattering look that can instantly make a women feel powerful, sexy and oh-so glamourous.

Here are six easy steps to create a gorgeous red hot pout:

Step 1: Use a Lip Exfoliator on your lips to create a smooth and clean base for the makeup.

Step 2: Outline your lips with a Lip Pencil in a similar colour to your lipstick. For those of you who don't have steady hands, not to worry, outline your lips in small dashes and then connect them together. This way, you'll always end up with a clean line.

Step 3: Colour in your lips with the Lip Pencil; filling them in allows for the lipstick to adhere to your lips better and will result in longer lasting lip colour.

Step 4: Apply the Lipstick directly from the tube onto the centre of your lips. You needn't worry about brushes just yet; applying the Lipstick directly allows for more concentration of colour and will result in a deeper, richer, more vibrant red.

Step 5: Use a Lip Brush to paint the corners of your mouth, and then smooth over the entire lip for an even looking application.

Step 6: Blot your lips with a tissue and reapply the lip colour.

Here are some of our favourite reds for a sensational pout:

Dolce and Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in 'Devil' (220), MAC Lipstick in 'Russian Red', Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick in #44, Revlon Colorburst Lipstick in 'True Red', and Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in 'Red Revival'

Which red lipstick is your favourite?

@Cathy - lip exfoliators are great, especially in the winter when my lips are chapped beyond belief.

@Ali - then you'll absolutely love MAC's Russian Red - it's a brilliant blend of red and orange. After testing it out...I have to admit that I went back and bought it...sigh...

I love any red that is more of a poppy red (orangey red) than a blue red. It's so vibrant and fresh.

Tip 1 is key, especially if your using a lipstick with a matte finish. I put on bright matte red lipstick a while ago without realizing my lips were quite dry and it looked ridiculous!
