Makeup Trend: Bold Red Lips

Posted by Cathy | Monday March 7, 20118 comments

A classic favourite, bold red lips were all the rage at the Spring 2011 runway shows.  Cherry red, scarlet and orange undertones are the ones to wear this season.

Zac Posen, Dior, Gucci

Here are some of our favourite new reds:

Gloss
Yves Saint Laurent Golden Gloss in 'Golden Cherry' $12, Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 'Always Red' $12, GOSH Intense Lip Colour in 'Intense Red' $15

Lipstick
L'Oreal Infallible Le Rouge in 'Ravishing Red' $12.99, Lise Watier Duo Glam 'Rouge Infini' $27, Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Lip Stain in 'Keep Up The Flame' $10.49

Will you wear bold red?  Or is Orange or Honeysuckle more your style?

I really love the cherry red shade Dior used on the runway - it's so fresh!

I love red lipstick I think it is very classic it reminds me of black cocktail dresses and pearls. I have to agree though it is always hard to find the right shade and then apply it. I'm on a mission!!!

Im still undecided about my skin tone.. I always doubt myself when I pick one. I'm leaning towards warm or neutral? Someone will have to help me out with it..

@Lauren, It's really all about finding the right shade for you. You'll have to figure out if you have cooler or warmer skin tone.

Cool skin tone - looks better with silver jewelry - find red with a little more blue pigment/undertone
Warm skin tone - looks better with gold jewelry - find red with a little more orange pigment/undertone

Of course, if you have neutral skin tone, you'll look good in anything! :)

I remember this trend from when I was very little, and I used to tell my mom not to wear it because I didn't like it. Over the past few years however, I've started loving this trend! I think it looks so classic! But you're right Lauren, the wrong shade could offset the color in your face, and result in the skin looking quite blotchy. Also, with red, you have to make sure there is no bleeding--you don't want to look like the bride of Frankenstein. I particularly love how Gucci and Dior did the red lips.

I love this trend, but when I try it I always feel like my face looks blotchy (as if the red pigments in my face are more pronounced.)
