Popular Blogger: BeautyEditor Michelle Villett

BeautyEditor Michelle Villett truly walks the talk.  Formerly a beauty editor with ELLE Canada, she eventually decided it was time to explore the intensely interactive realm of The Web.  What is it actually like to be a Beauty Editor?  Her behind-the-scenes approach to the question is just part of what makes her blog a must-read.

ChickAdvisor: What is the most rewarding experience you’ve had as a result of your blog?

Michelle Villett: I was exposed to a lot of glamorous things as a beauty editor—trips abroad, extravagant gifts, fancy parties, etc.—but I’ve gotta say, I do what I do for the readers. (Awwww….) I know we’re not saving the world here, but if I can help someone get better skin, save some money on her beauty routine or find a product she adores, it makes me incredibly happy.

CA:  Is there one specific reader interaction that stands out in your mind?

MV: One of the things I tend to go on about on my blog is how many times I’ve been burned by bad haircuts. I always return, tail between my legs, to Bill Angst, my longtime hairdresser in Toronto. As far as I’m concerned, he’s the best cutter in the city… if not country! (Maybe the world—ha!)

Anyway, a reader had emailed for advice on who could handle her curly hair, and she ended up going to Bill on my recommendation. After, she sent a wonderful note about how thrilled she was with her new ‘do. I guess that’s more a reflection on him than me, but I was glad I could initiate that connection. I’m a firm believer that a good haircut can change your life!

Current Beauty Fave: Giorgio Armani Blushing Fabric Brush

CA: Which one beauty staple have you been loyal to the longest?

MV: Oh, beauty editors are not loyal at all! Surprisingly, there are very few products that I love enough to go out of my way to purchase. Probably my all-time fave is a fragrance called Guaiac by Red Flower. It’s organic and smells like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. Runners-up would be Nvey Eco Erase concealer and Josie Maran’s lip gloss.

CA: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

MV: At the time, I had no idea that there was such a job as a beauty editor, but I was always creating little mini fashion magazines. I drew all the pictures and wrote captions and headlines. Not much has changed!

CA: If you were stranded on an island, what three items would you need with you?

MV: I actually HAVE been stranded on a desert island, in Thailand once. The first things I missed were sunscreen and contact lens solution, so I’d bring those. Along with a plane or boat to get out of Dodge!
