What's easier than throwing on a cardigan? Whether topping a tee and jeans or tossed over a summer dress, cardigans are those go-over-anything items every girl should have her closet stocked with. As the weather gets warmer and the AC goes on in the office, we're toting a lightweight cardi with us to take off or put on depending on the temp.

The best way to punch up basic black? A cardigan in a rich jewel tone. This classic Ralph Lauren cardigan is one of those pieces that you'll continue to wear from season to season.

Lauren's beaded cardigan adds some sparkle to basic blue jeans and a tee, but would look just as lovely with a dress on a cooler summer evening.

The bright green of Ali's Joe Fresh cardigan is perfect for spring and a fun way to play with colour. The cropped sleeve makes it light and summery.

Siofan's Merona cardigan from Target is in a painterly flower motif. Like Cathy, she's used it to punch up an outfit of basic black.
