Posing Wall: Meet Hafsa

Hey everyone! I’m Hafsa, the new editorial intern on the ChickAdvisor team! I’m an international student studying journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto, and my home city is Dubai, United Arab Emirates. For my posing wall, I’m showing you all some pictures of where I’ve come from!

Many of you probably already have your perceptions of Dubai... sure, there’s gold, glitz and glamour - I won’t lie, I love it!

But Dubai is really similar to Toronto in a lot of ways. Here I am eating my McDonald’s hamburger!

This is a picture from my high school prom in Dubai...

Fashion and lifestyle in Dubai is a fusion of Western trends and Eastern traditions, but the Arab culture, though sometimes hidden in the hodgepodge of international tourism, never fails to make its presence known.

Actually, less than 20 per cent of Dubai's population is made up of local Dubai-born Arabs, and the remaining 80 per cent are all expatriates from America, Canada, South Africa, Europe, etc. So of that small 20 per cent, only a few wear the niqab, or the face veil. There's no law that makes it mandatory-- it's just a part of Arab culture. Many other Muslim women in Dubai cover their heads with the hijab, or headscarf, but that's not mandatory either!
