Prom Makeup: Bold Lips

We've been raving about bold lips in fuchsia, orange and (of course) classic red for the past few months. The bold lip is not for the shy or timid of heart, it's all about standing out and making a statement, so what better time to say something with your makeup than at your grad formal?

These celebs know how to stand out:

(Top) Taylor Swift, Kaley Cuoco, Lucy Hale
(Bottom) Jennifer Hudson, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry

There is nothing worse than getting half way through your night out and discover your lip colour has faded and left you with the dreaded "rim." You'll want to make sure you choose a lipstick that can stay strong all night long (maybe even longer than you). Check out what some of our members had to say about these products.

Red

1.
Rimmel London Moisture Renew Lipstick (in Cherry Licious)
"When they say moisture renew, they mean it! I have dry skin, including lips, and this stuff really retains moisture in my lips. It's fantastic!"
– mcamilleK

2.
Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick (in Gabrielle)
"
The formula is super creamy and pigmented. They glide on lips (Even the darker colours) they’re moisturizing and don’t dry my lips out. They have a fine edge which is great for applying lipsticks with precisions." – Mandy.f

3. M.A.C Pro Longwear Lipcolor (in Passion Preserved)
"This is the first lip colour that I have used that stays on, even if I have eaten an entire meal. This lip colour's staying power is amazing." – shoppergirl

Fuchsia

1. NYX Round Lipstick (in Gardenia)
"I am in love with these lipsticks! They’re super easy to apply and don’t dry out my already dry lips, very pigmented (gorgeous colors) and they also had a nice floral scent to it."
– xagnes

2. Covergirl Lip Perfection Lipstick
"I tried “Temptress” it's a rosy pink colour. First of all, it applied really smoothly - if I didn't already know it was a drugstore brand I would have thought differently. The colour is very pigmented and it has a lot of staying power. I didn't have to reapply at all." cathy3087

3.
YSL Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick (in Provocative Pink)
"This lipstick is the lightest and softest and creamiest out there! It just glides on your lips and the pigment is really strong you only need one coat!" – IllTakeIt

"The Mirror on the end is handy for applying the lipstick. Glides on very smoothly (like silk).Your lips are so saturated in colour that the colour tends to stay longer." – xena

Orange

1.
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick (in Siren)
"Revlon's lipsticks are excellent, moisturizing, great colour payoff. You don't have to swipe your lips a million times to feel like you're wearing something, or to get colour." – bebeseh

2. M.A.C Neon Orange Lipstick
"Usually lipsticks tend to dry my lips but I found that MAC lipsticks in general go on smoothly and is moisturizing for a lipstick." – Judy37

The fuchsia on Kaley Cuoco looks fabulous! I was just thinking to myself "I wish I could pull off fuchsia lipstick" when I saw Siofan's post and went to the link she gave. I'm going to do that! I'm comfortable in tangerines so maybe now it's time to broaden my horizons even further!

Yeah I guess you're right mamluv, I just never thought of it that way. I guess it's time I started thinking out of the box, or just thinking. LOL

Actually Takoda, I'd think that the opposite is true. Unless you're very very careful about coordination and complementary colours (with an "e" - that means "not matching but work together"), I'd stick with neutrals and blacks/whites when wearing bold lips like that. You'll also need to go easy on eyes and cheeks with such a statement lip.

I think you
also have to be dressed in the right colours for it to work. I'm a bit of a tom
boy type so I don't have a hole lot of bright coloured closes. A few for summer
and that's about it. I guess it's just something you have to get use to like
you said Siofan. I like it on other people I just don’t care for it on myself.

Haha! Takoda, you are right that can happen. It totally depends on finding the right shade for your skin tone and really careful application. I absolutely love the bold lip look. It's a great way to brighten up your face and when worn with minimal eye makeup looks quite fresh!

@takoda I think a lot of people feel that way! If you're used to seeing yourself without it, it can be pretty jarring to see your lips so colourful. Beauty Geeks did a great post about how to train yourself to wear bright lips in fuchsia if you do ever want to give it another go:

It looks good on some people, but I don't care for it on myself.

I always felt like I looked like a clown. LOL
