Protect Lips with SPF

We’ve talked a lot about sunscreen for your body, and for your children. But there’s one part of your body that we think you might be forgetting: your lips. Your lips can burn just as badly as the rest of you so don’t forget to use some SPF.

1. Smooth and soothe dry chapped lips with Life Brand Sunthera3 Lip Balm SPF 30 (C$8.99).

2. Green Beaver Lip Balm (C$6.99) claims to be non-whitening, organic protection from the sun.

3. Benefit Lip Balm SPF 15 (US$20.00) is a blend of sunscreen, Vitamin E and the scent of a rose.

4. NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment (US$25.00) nourishes your lips with a subtle hint of colour.

5. Etival Ambient Lip Shield Stick (C$15.00) is made with Vitamins A, D, E, K and B-5. That should keep your lips soft and SPF 45 will keep them sun damage free.

6. Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Colour (US$22.00) conditions lips to keep them looking their best in their new shade

7. Tarte Cosmetics 24/7 Natural Lip Sheer SPF 15 (C$21.00) is paraben, phthalates and synthetic fragrances. It does have some coconut oil and vitamin E to keep your lips super soft.

How do you deal with chapped lips in the summer (or winter)?

The problem I have with these lip products is that they never stay on very long so I'll have to keep reapplying :(

This is a really important reminder, especially since a lot of women tend to reach for sheer lipglosses in the summer instead of lipsticks or balms.

The problem with some glosses is that they actually intensify the sun's rays on your lips like a magnifying glass and can do more damage than bare lips. If you love a gloss, be sure to get one with SPF!!

Lipsticks have more pigment and so protect a little better, but as this article points out, a boost of SPF is still very important. Balms usually have no pigment and can be hit or miss on SPF so read the label carefully. Keep in mind that many formulations are designed for dry and chapped lips that are more common in winter - but even in winter it's important to protect against the sun.
