Quick and Easy DIY: Add Studs to Clothing

Embellished collars, studded shoulders and lapels and metallic details are some of the 'it' trends this fall. They're popping up everywhere; on dresses, jackets, blazers, tees and even bottoms. The rule of thumb this season seems to be: if it's studded, wear it.

While I love me some sweet studded apparel, I take issue with the fact that this trend is so easily DIY'able. It just doesn't seem worth it for me to purchase pricey garments for only a season or two. Especially when studs themselves cost only a few dollars and can be added to a cheap tee to get a high end look. Yet at the same time, studding requires you to do a bit of searching for materials and this can be a hassle. Le sigh. What's a crafty chick to do?

My studded garment wishlist:

1. Sparkle & Fade Studded Triangle Cutout Tee (US$39.00)

2. Zara Jacket with Zips and Studded Lapel (C$139.00)

3. H&M Dress (C$49.95)

4. Zara T-Shirt with Pocket and Studs (C$49.90)

I have a solution and it's so simple. Use earrings! Pierce them through the fabric to add studs and embellishments to anything you want!

I love this because earrings are inexpensive, accessible and everyone has a few extras around that they don't know what to do with. You can simply use the earring backing if you want to remove it later on. You could also try just folding over the post to secure it.

I suggest purchasing large sets of inexpensive studs to use. They usually come in multiple sizes and you'll have enough to create an interesting design. Here are a few I like:

1. Rocks Paper Metal Teardrop Earrings (US$15.00)

2.
Claire's Pearl Stud Earrings Set of 9 (C$14.25)

3.
Forever 21 Set of Metal Studs (C$4.80)

4. Forever 21 Spike Stud Set (C$4.80)

5. GirlProps Bird Studs (C$6.99)

6. Aldo Lubine Earrings (C$10.00)

7. H&M Stud Set (C$6.95)

So ladies, let's hear your thoughts. How do you feel about this trend? Would you do this yourself and do you like the earring idea?

Studs really do make a difference on a clothing article. Great ideas.

I haven't really fed into the stud hype (yet) but I think some clothes or even shoes can look nice with them. AlthoughI don't know whether I have the patience to do the stud thing myself I think the earring idea is fab!

I love the idea that when studs go out of style I can remove it or even change around the design! Plus it seems super easy to do.

I really like the stud trend! I always thought it was a little edgy for me to wear often, but that H&M;dress proves that it can be ultra feminine too! This earring idea is soooo clever!! I'll have to pick up a big set of stud earrings soon and try it out!

Neat! That's a good ideal except I would bend the pin to prevent me from loosing them! Just have to make sure you won't want to wear those earrings again!

Cute idea. I'm just not a big fan of studs in general. :(

This is a cool idea. It would be an inexpensive choice for anyone who has a "Ardenes" store in their area. You can get a 20pack of earring studs for $1.00 - But you have to buy 10 for $10.00, for the deal.
