Spring 2011 Hair Colour Trends

Nothing gives a boost of confidence like a fresh and vibrant hair colour. Like fashion, hair hues follow specific trends.  Here's what we're expecting for Spring 2011:

Blondes

Jason Wu, Carlos Miele, Rodarte (all S/S 2011)

It's all about warm honey tones:  platinum and ashy shades are out. Wella Professionals Colour Ambassador Aura Friedman (via Refinery29) advises you stay "within lustrous metallic tones from 24K gold to rose gold - any kind of goldeny tone."

DIY options we like: Garnier HerbaShine or Clairol Perfect 10

Brunettes

Mila Kunis (People's Choice Awards 2011), Rachel Roy Spring 2011, Jessica Biel (Glamour Reel Moment October 2010)

Eva Scrivo of NYC-based Eva Scrivo Salon, colourist and beauty author says this season brunettes are going darker and cooler: "Now it's pale milk chocolate shades, peanut buttery taupes, and violet-based brunettes.  The cooler brunettes for spring means a lot of single-toned, solid darker shades that are healthy and full of shine" (via Refinery29).

DIY option we like:  Clairol's new Natural Instincts Vibrant (the package comes with a week 2 color refresher package to revitalize your colour and add pigments back to your hair - genius, right?)

Redheads

Christina Hendricks (on Mad Men set), Jayma Mays (at Golden Globes 2011), Burberry 2011

Going red this season?  Visit a stylist first to pick the right tone for your skin.  Darker skin tones can play with deep orange and plum-based colours, while lighter skin tones can experiment with bright fiery reds, advises Ursula Stephens, celeb stylist--and the one behind Rihanna's 'do.

If you are in the hunt for a new stylist, try one of these top 3 reader-rated salons in Toronto:

Evoke Hair Salon - 2245 Yonge Street, Salvatore Leonetti Salon - 69 Yorkville Ave, Salon Liberte - 365 Yonge Street

Not a Torontian?  No problem - browse through our salon reviews for other cities here.

And if you're wondering whether ombré is still In, we're hearing from our friend Beauty Editor that tone-on-tone highlights and multidimensional solid colours are the way to go for 2011.  Read here: soft, natural-looking, and less drastic.

Will you change things up for Spring 2011?  Which shade are you eager to try?

I'm loving the Carlos Miele and Rodarte blonde hues. They look so beautiful and rich. I want to do that to my hair, but it would take so much work to lighten it to that..

I'm not into the current trends for brunettes - I prefer warmer tones for almost all skin types.

I wish I could pull off the red of that model from Burberry - it's gorgeous!

I am so glad that you mentioned multi-dimensional...because traditionally boxed haircolor is solid and blaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I was very disappointed in the foam giveaway...Clairol's website couldn't handle the demand and crashed resulting in a lot of people not getting a box! They tried to resolve it by offering an additional 25,000 boxes but history does repeat itself. Unfortunately I have been reading how angry people are over this and while I don't think it's necessary to get that upset over a box of color, I understand the frustration.

On the other hand, I did recently visit salon Liberte (so many great recommendations on CA) and got an awesome cut/color from Curtis. I will definitely be back and will look into some 'solid, multidimensional' color!

Great post Lauren!

It'll be 2 weeks tomorrow since I dyed my hair with the Clairol Natural Instincts. I'll be using the 2 week refresher pack, and I'm pretty excited because I don't feel like my hair has faded all that much yet - should look pretty awesome after I use the pack :)
