Spring 2011 Hair Trend: The Low Ponytail
Last year we saw the topknot, the pixie and ombré colour as the big hair trends. Early in 2011, all signs are pointing to The Ponytail. And the reason we're so excited is that at last we have a hairstyle most of us know how to recreate at home.
(Looks like all those bad-hair-turned-ponytail days paid off in spades, no?)
We saw it on the Spring/Summer 2011 catwalks...
Jessica Jensen & Alexander Berardi (Toronto), DKNY (New York)
Chanel (Paris), Carolina Herrera (New York)
...and more recently, at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards.
Amy Adams (SAGs), Jennifer Lopez (Globes)
Kyra Sedgwick (Globes), Julianna Margulies (SAGs)
While the look from the runway was low on the nape and with a strong part, celebs wore a mix of middle- and low-placed 'dos.
Are you excited about this trend? Or does this casual look leave you rather underwhelmed?

I love love love Kyra Sedgwick's hair! And J Lo's is great too - it's not too low which is probably why I like it more than some of the others. Is she really in her 40s??? Wow I can't believe that! She looks fantastic!
@Lauren: JLO.. YES! Oh my goodness- she is literally getting more beautiful as time goes by. I cannot believe she is in her 40s!

I love the way Kyra does it!
Jessica, Alexander and Kyra wore it best. I agree with mamaluv, this look is more for the thick haired rather than thin. Thick clean hair. Oily haired pony's look like the wearer is trying to mask a bad hair day. Then again perhaps there are some exceptions...
I really like how versatile this style is; you can wear it clean and simple like Kyra, but you can also wear a statement hair piece (like feathers or a large barrette) without it looking overdone.
I like it, and actually wore my hair like that for a cocktail party on Saturday night! It looked lovely :)
I’m happy this trend is coming back because I haven’t stopped using it. I find myself putting my hair up at least once a day. My hair’s so long that it tends to get in the way if I don’t, but I was feeling a little silly going out in public with it tied up. Now I don’t have to worry about it. Sometime I’ll put up to three ties in one pony. I also use to use one of though things where you pulled your tail through the top where the pony was tied to give it some style. I can’t for the life of me think of the name of the tool right now, but you could make your pony into a few different looks with it. If anyone knows what its call could you let me know so I can keep my eye out for a new one? It was a great way to keep my hair away from my boy’s when they were babies and still look nice.
I agree, I like this style with a lot of volume at the crown of the head and through the pony.
I love the low pony, but generally prefer it when the hair pulls over the ears a little - like in the Jessica Jensen/Alexander Berardi pic. Not so much a fan of the look on ladies with really fine hair the way Chanel styled it; I think this is more of a thick-haired style. |
