Spring Beauty: Skin and Nails

Last fall, when beauty companies revealed their new collections for spring at hush hush press events, we got the inside scoop from beauty experts on how to look flawless this spring and what colour trends to watch for.

First, we sat down with Clarins' National Makeup Expert, Patrice Boudreau, who explained the importance of building a good foundation. Even if you were blessed with flawless skin, you'll want an extra barrier to keep the sun's harmful rays at bay.

"Foundations not only make your skin look perfect, they can treat your skin," explains Boudreau. Many foundations (including Clarins), contain anti-pollution protection, anti-free radical protection and sun protection against UVA and UVB rays, he says.

"Test the colour on the inside of your arm rather than the inside of your wrist", Boudreau suggests. "The inside of your wrist is paler than your face."

OPI's brand new Hong Kong collection

Next, we hopped on over to a luncheon with OPI Founder Suzy Weiss-Fischmann to get a sneak peek at the brand's latest covetable collection: Hong Kong. Like the season's shadows, these lovely laquers are vivid. Jade is the New Black is a rich hunter green that is sure to draw compliments. Other notable numbers are Suzy Says Feng Shui (pictured below), a striking cobalt blue that Weiss-Fischmann wore to the collection's Toronto debut. If you prefer softer, less chip-revealing colours, Lucky Lucky Lavender and Meet me on Star Ferry will tickle you pink.

Suzy explains her collection like this:

"Fashion is very diverse for spring. There is lot's going on. We're trying to make people feel happy. We're just coming off a recession, globally and we want to feel happy and good about ourselves and that's really what spring is about. And that took me to Hong Kong. If you look at the palette, there's lots going on. When you see the old beautiful boats in the harbour juxtaposed with the new and exciting sky scrapers... it was really a great city to get inspiration from."

What do you think of the new colours? Will you wear them? Which are your favourites?
