Spring Trends Alert: Florals

| Sunday March 28, 20102 comments

From the runways to the streets, this spring the floral print is the hottest thing since the boyfriend jean!  But the tricky print can be fussy , so to avoid a floral faux-pas, I headed to the source of all things fashion Mary Kitchen - Reporter for CTV's 'In Fashion' and Fashion Television Channel to give us some pointers.

"You don't want to necessarily wear florals in their traditional sense", Kitchen advises. "For instance, you may want to pair feminine floral with edgier footwear. Keep it modern by balancing proportions and looks....For inspiration think dreamier lighter 'Alice and Wonderland' rather than 90s sitcom "Blossom" or "Laura Ashley" looks."

Bust out your cute floral dress with the black leather jacket you bought last season, paired with your cute new oxford flats. But since you can't avoid "busyness" while dealing with florals, Kitchen cautions against over accessorizing.

"I personally loved the very clean floral looks on the runway this season" Kitchen says.

"If you want to go for an edgier 'floral look' while keeping it clean, try more stylized hair, a stronger shoe or a deeper shade of lipstick."

While florals historically make sense for day time, Kitchen argues they work just as easily for night.

"This new and improved floral look is not just for daytime. You may not think of floral for evening, especially not for black tie, but when we see prints on the Oscar red carpet from the likes of Rachel McAdams and best supporting actress nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal, it's safe to say that prints are good to go anywhere you want to take them."

Newbie here!

Love the floral trend! Recently bought a VERY cute floral cardigan from H&M;that I am in love with. I love it for a more vintage look as well. I'll pair it with a high waisted skirt too!

I do believe I know which dress you got! I was in there not too long ago looking at their really cute strapless tulip dresses with the pockets... They had some really adorable floral bags too. (maybe over kill with my cardi)

Oh, florals.

The last time I embraced this trend was the mid 90s for my grade 9 grad. I wore a short floral dress with a matching floral bolero complete with black velvet choker and side pony tail. I thought it was cutting edge at the time. Looking back, am filled with shame.

Thankfully, the new modern florals are better. I found a really cute dress from FCUK. Still, I caution against excess.

What do you think of the trend?
