Staff Favorites: Books
What does June, July, and August all have in common? Books! We've been presenting a list of hot books that are coming onto the market each month. Now, we decided to look to some of our staff to see what books they like and maybe they can inspire you to read one of their favorites. There are so many books to choose from but we've narrowed it down to two books per staff. We have also left out Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games since we all know how popular they are. It's time we give the spotlight to other novels that are worth mentioning.
If you're into Chick Lit then the following are perfect for you:
Michelle recommended Eccentric Glamour: Creating an Insanely More Fabulous You by Simon Doonan and said: "I enjoyed every page of the book, it's insightful and funny, an inspiration for YOU and your wardrobe."
Michelle also added Blow by Blow: The Story Of Isabella Blow by Detmar Blow and mentioned that "If you're familiar with Isabella Blow and her extensive collection of fascinators, this book is for you."
Jenni's pick of The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger also made it into the chick lit category. She said "This kind of book really influenced me to understand what kind of life I want to have in the future after I graduate, and get an idea of the industry I want to work in."
Alexandra recommended Gunn's Golden Rules: Life's Little Lessons For Making It Work by Tim Gunn "because of the wealth and diversity of information provided."
Want Humour? These two books will have you laughing in no time:
Jenni likes Thank You For Smoking by Christopher Buckley and said "I've recommended it to everyone who wants a fun read!"
Alexandra thought Sense And Sensibility And Sea Monsters by Ben H. Winters was a funny book and said "I love Jane Austen, I love hilariousness and I enjoy sea monsters and they all are compiled into the book Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters."
From the Tearjerker/Thinker category, these books fit the bill:
Tammy fell in love with The Last Dog On the Hill by Steve Duno and boy was it a tearjerker! She said "To all animal lovers out there. This is a must read. It really shows how strong a bond can be between man and animal."
Tammy also enjoyed A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. She thought "the separate lives of the two women were already very interesting and when their lives intertwined it became such a powerful and emotional journey".
Claire fell in love with Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. She claims that "It has been a while since I read a book I could not put down. Water for Elephants is a story of remembrance - glory days, secrets, lies, love, and a bygone era, by bestselling Canadian author Sara Gruen."
We can't forget about the Classics. Here are some oldies but goodies:
Tasha's choice of The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton had her in tears! "I went through a "classics" phase. I absolutely fell in love with this book. The heroine Lily Bart is tragic, a little shallow and you can't help but want things to work out for her."
Tasha is also into the teen fiction Alanna The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce. She said this book "has everything you could ask for in a book, a love story, war, family, and a plot to murder the king."
Claire likes Cheaper By The Dozen by Frank Gilbreth & Ernestine Gilbreth Carey and described this book as "absolutely hilarious and will have you guffawing out loud. That Mr. Gilbreth was clearly QUITE a character."
What genre of books do you like to read? And are there any books you would recommend to us staff?
