Street Style: What They're Wearing In London

Our H.Q team member Nikki was offered the chance to intern with the London Daily Express (fashion desk, natch!) for a few months, and although our jealousy was riled to coma-inducing quantities of triple fudge ice cream proportions, we were thrilled for her opportunity.  Even better, she agreed to play Style Spy for us while in jolly old England. Here's her report:

London is one of the fashion capitals of the world, and one of those places where you constantly feel under-dressed no matter where you go. Two of the major trends you see everywhere are sequins and leopard-print anything.

And who said sequins have to be formal? Bethany threw this black skirt with silver sequins under a distressed denim jacket and red jumper - so completely casual and comfortable. Her vintage floral bag caught my eye when I spotted her strolling in the Holborn district.

I can guarantee you will see someone wearing a leopard-print item at least every two minutes in the streets of central London - coats, scarves, and “wellies” (rain boots) are the most popular.  Victoria is a little more daring with her style. She is rocking these leopard-print pants paired with a lace top as she waits for the tube (subway).  It's an edgy combo but she pulls it off.

So tell us: which style statement do you prefer?  Do you think Londoners are more fashionable than North Americans?

Thx ladies!!

And Cathy I completely agree with you. Women and men in London are always well-dressed. And what we would think of as fashion "risks" in North America, are often deemed the norm in Europe. And I credit it to the high street fashion in London. If you want "trendy" items, you can head into any retail store and pick up whatever items you're looking for. In North America, there tends to be more digging involved. A good leopard-print trouser isn't available in every store.

And Oendrila, I agree, I feel like I can wear anything out of the house. Everyone is so creative with their outfits in London!

When I was in London, I felt more confident to wear whatever I wanted without a second thought. Here, I find Fashion more conservative. I find British fashion daring, accepting, and appreciating of uniqueness. In North America, I find that Fashion is more muted. Beautiful, but muted. Nikki, congrats on the Daily Express! x

I think as a whole, North American women lean toward sleek minimalism and (often) neutral colour palettes, especially in the last number of years - and there's nothing wrong with that. It's just less visually stimulating than European fashion and for that reason I often find it a little boring.

I don't really like animal prints on pants, but I do like Bethany's look! (however, I wouldn't pair sequins with a cardi like that - that's too eclectic for me)

I LOVE this! Thanks for snapping up cool London fashion for us Nikki!

When I think of British fashion I think of cool, urban streetstyle. These 2 looks are really cool but they aren't my personal style. I find that young British women tend to dress less conservatively than we do in North America (Nikki, do you find this is true or no?). They also seem to be less afraid to take a fashion risk.

I think London fashion has a big impact on us in North America. I am really into some of the "wellies" I've seen in Toronto in the past few days - Think I might invest in a pair of those Hunter Rain Boots and cute leg warmers. They're fashionable and practical
