Style Inspiration: The Movie Clueless
If I am ever feeling in a style funk, I look to the movies for inspiration. There, you can find a new way of looking at your old tees or the clothing from a few summers ago in the back of your closet. Clueless is one of my all time favourite 'stylispiration' movies. Being a late '80s child, I saw Clueless in theatres and it pretty much blew my mind. 'As If' flowed in and out of my vocabulary and mini skirts, plaids and mary jane shoes were all I thought about. I love the mix of preppy, grunge and designer chic that became the signature Cher look.
Here is a look back at Clueless, the fashions of the '90s and how you can take inspiration from the film and use it in your own wardrobe!
The Sheer Blouse: We ran an article of how to wear the sheer trend a few weeks back so if you're stumped on what to wear with the shirt or if you need a few more options, check it out here! I love the sheer black, bell sleeved blouse and my second choice is the collared, long sleeve and extra long, tuxedo style sheer top.
Intrepret this trend by: Ditching the bell sleeves and tuxedo frills but keep the lengths! A cropped sheer top would look stylish with a lacy camisole underneath and the extra long shirt would actually be very cool with a mini that peeks out underneath like Cher wears.
Try with: NastyGal Laced Chiffon Blouse (US$68.00)
Plaid Mini: Cher rocks the plaid mini with a mini sweater vest and button down in the movie. Last fall, we were mad with plaid. It didn't seem to matter what colour or type of plaid it was, but flannel was the 'it' fabric. Instead of defaulting to lumberjack comforts, why not try some tartan?
Interpret this trend by: Avoiding oversized and bulky- go for a cute, vintage inspired tartan dress! Forgo the sweater vest and headband to avoid looking too preppy and opt instead for a retro feel.
Try with: Cooperative Study Hall Dress (US$59.00), Old Navy Poplin-Stretch Dress Shirt (C$29.50)
Mini Blazer: Cher and Dionne both strut down their high school hallway wearing matching plaid minis and blazers. We're still loving plaid of course but this look is very '90s and needs a freshening up!
Interpret this trend by: Trying on a coloured boyfriend blazer. A short blazer makes the look very retro, but necessarily in the best way. A more modern cut is a looser, boxier cut- the boyfriend blazer. A bright colour, like this bold red is the best way to take the blazer from last season to this one!
Try with: Forever 21 Essential Woven Blazer (C$33.80)
The White Dress: One of my favourite lines in the film is when Cher comes down in a very tight white dress, ready for her date and her father asks, "What the hell is that?"
Cher: "A dress."
Her father: "Says who?"
Cher: "Calvin Klein."
Interpret this trend by: showing less skin! A longer hemline, long sleeves or covered neckline will not only be more appropriate but it's also a more trendy cut.
Try with: Scalloped Lace Dress (US$88.00)
