Summer of Beauty: Getting Wavy Curls and Beachy Boho Hairstyles
This summer, I've resolved to look fabulous. Not just once in a while or on special occasions, but every single day. It's kind of a big feat, but I'm determined that everyday will be a good hair day, everyday I will have soft glowing skin and everyday I will be dressed to kill!
First, I'm going to tackle the hair. I have kind of unruly, frizzy prone and dull hair, but this summer, I'm going for bouncy, light, wavy curls and warmer tones to match the weather! Think Kate Hudson meets Anne Hathaway (pre the Les Miserable cut) with a little Angelina thrown in for good measure. It's going to be difficult but luckily, I've got an arsenal full of fab beauty products to help me out!
Hair Dying and Highlights: DIY Style!
L'Oreal Paris Sublime Mousse (C$13.99), John Frieda Precision Foam (C$13.00), Garnier Nutrisse Mousse (C$12.49)
After years of dying my hair black back in my high school days, I was hesitant to dye my hair at all. However, I finally broke down and dyed my hair myself at home. I used a foam dye and loved the results. I am completely in love now with having vibrant, bold and warm coloured hair. This spring and summer, go for red, caramel brunettes and honey blondes. While some might be apprehensive about dying their hair at home, these new foam dyes solve many of the issues I previously had with box dye: they are less messy, there is a lot of product and even coverage.
I also recently tried some DIYing ombre highlights on my own and I used Marc Anthony Easy Lites (C$11.99) and I've got to tell you, I am pretty impressed with my results! Check out this video for more details on how to use the product.
Your Tool Kit
Sometimes, your hair needs a bit of help in the curling the department. Ladies, it's time to get out our tool belts. Try T3 Voluminous Hot Rollers (C$20.00) for big, bouncy curls. The Verge Bubble Wand Curling Iron (US$99.00) is made especially for creating that "imperfect" curl. And for all the ladies out there with hair like mine, you all know how essential a blow dyer with a diffuser is! Pictured here is T3 Feather Weight Luxe (C$280.00).
Rowenta Curl Active (C$179.99) is an automatic curling iron. Yup, that's right, with the pressing of a button this magic wand with curl your hair. After holding for a few seconds and letting go, you're left with loose waves. Check out how well this one worked on Lorna's usually pin-straight hair.
Curling and Beach Spray Styling Products
1. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray (C$29.50)
2. Tresemme Flawless Curls Curl Defining Spray Gel (US$8.57)
3. Sally Hershberger Curvaceous Elasto-Curl Treatment (C$12.99)
4. Got 2b Kinkier Double Curling Power Mousse (C$6.99)
5. Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Enhancing Gel (C$3.99)
6. David Babaii for Wildaid Bohemian Beach Spray (US$9.95)
7. Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray (C$11.99)
I swear by curling sprays for my hair which can often turn out more kinky than curly without the help of these miracle workers. I have a hair ritual that I've been doing for some time now and it always works: I wash my hair at night, use a volumizing product and some curling spray on my wet hair then tie it up a messy bun and go to bed. When I wake up, I give it 5 minutes with a blow dryer and voila- set for the day!
Recently, I've also become addicted to beach, or sea salt sprays. They give great texture, smell and wave to hair and they always make me think I'm back at the beach in the sand (I wish). We also have a DIY beach spray recipe from a member, check that out here.
Protect, Nourish and Lift
Of course, with all the heat and product used on your hair, you always need to hydrate your hair and give it a little TLC. I recommend trying to skip a wash every so often, on a day when you won't be going out or doing anything major. This will let your natural oils moisturise your hair. Instead of washing, try a dry shampoo like Batiste Dry Shampoo (US$7.99).
I've touted the benefits of hair masks before but I only get the chance to do them every so often because they can be messy and take up time. Instead, try a mask that you can use in shower and only needs to be on for a minute or so, I like L'Oreal Paris Total Repair 5 Replenishing Mask (C$7.69) .
Finally, if you've seen the recap photos of our Pantene AquaLight event, you know how wonderful my hair turned out (if I do say so myself). I've been using Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light Conditionning Shake (C$6.99) after I wash to keep my hair soft without weighing it down. On that note, I love a head of big hair so I always use a volumizing mousse to give some lift, if you're like me try Ouidad PlayCurl Volumizing Foam (C$22.00).

I love Garnier Nutrisse Mousse...I have tried almost all of the Foam Hair Dye's and Garnier by far has the best one for me.
I would still only do this on occasion. I don't fancy waking up early in the morning. A girl needs her sleep. :) But great tips for when I do get around to it.
David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach my favorite
I have long hair and I'm not a fan of hair on my neck when i'm warm, so in the summer I usually opt for milkmaid braids or Princess Leia buns :)
@becky sorry- I should have specified that was for an individual clip and not the set! I got your hopes up!!!
@beachbabe: try using two boxes. What colour is your hair? Use the guidelines on the box to estimate what your hair will look like. I have the same problems you're describing.
T3 for $20!? So i ran (um, browsed very quickly) over to sephora... Nope, T3 is still going for $99. If you want to buy extra curlers and clips it's $20 a piece. I actually bought the T3 hot roller kit and I wasn't impressed. I then bought a connair hot roller kit (same concept) and it worked better. So I returned the T3 and kept the Connair. I really wanted to love the T3..oh well. My hair FALLS OUT like nobodys business. Any idea of how to stop it? Should I give up and chop it off? :(
Marc Anthony Beach spray is my favourite styling product right now. I spray my hair all over and put it in a braid over night. :) Might try their Easy Lites this Summer too.
@beachbabe I linked my review in the article but here it is as well: http://www.chickadvisor.com/item/marc-anthony-easy-lites-instant-highlighting-spray/ |
