The 5 New Year's Resolutions I'll Actually Keep

Posted by Claire | Thursday December 30, 20108 comments

Here we are coming up on New Year 2011, and it's time to take stock of the year gone by.  Somewhere deep in my pile of "To-Dos" is last year's list of resolutions, and without looking at it (hey, I didn't keep track all year so why start now?) I know there is the odd item or two left undone.

I generally scoff at New Year's Resolutions because they are either so vague or such general life goals that no silly list will make them any more compelling to get started on.  And anyway, we all know that these resolutions will last until maybe January 12th at the latest, don't we?  Exactly.

Let's focus on the resolutions we know we can keep, because that will lend a much-needed sense of accomplishment:

(1) lose 10 pounds eat healthier buy slightly bigger jeans that make my butt look good

(2) stop worrying so much about the future (after all, I need to free up some time to obsess over the past and my mother is much better at worrying than I could ever be)

(3) take more walks with the dogs (does putting them on the treadmill count?)

(4) When working from home, I will not sit at my desk in my pajamas all day.  Instead, I will bring my laptop into the bedroom.

(5) I will change my online passwords away from "password" (and apparently I'm not the only one who needs to do this)

In all seriousness now, Benjamin Franklin said it best with his resolution:  "Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man."

Lofty but perfect.  Happy New Year to you all!

What are some of your resolutions (silly and serious)?

The search engine Bing looked at the most popular search terms from around New Year's Resolution time last year and their predictions for the top 3 most popular New Year's Resolutions are no shocker:

1. Weight Loss. Searching words like "calorie", "calorie counters" and "Body Mass Index" skyrocketed last January.

2. Fitness. Half as many people were interested in exercising as they were specifically in weight loss.

3. Education. Searching info about educational classes shows that improving one's education is one of the most popular resolutions.

I think I make the same resolutions each year and they just never happen. I always go "ohhh I'll start next month".... 12 months later, I still haven't started!

My resolution this year should be to keep my resolutions!

In all seriousness though, I really must eat healthier and exercise more. Health is always #1!

Anyone have a story of a New Years resolution they have stuck with from past years?

I have two New Years resolutions I really want to keep:
1) to be less of a worrywart - I'm not one to 'go with the flow' - in fact I HATE the flow, but I've often realised that worrying doesn't help and sometimes its easier not to sweat the small stuff.

2) to shop more logically and less emotionally - this will be tough. I tend to shop when I'm emotional; whether I want to treat myself for a job well done, or need a quick 'pick me up', a lot of my shopping is associated to how I was feeling at the time of purchase. This isn't a good thing because even though the purchases aren't big ($5 here and there), they add up exponentially when the Visa bill arrives.

I want to eat more fruit and spend more time in the gym. If I do those two things I have so much more energy for everything else in life :)

No wonder there are so many hackers out there! :p

Yup, and that's only the #2 most popular one. The top spot belongs to good ol' 123456.

Yeah, I've done that one too... (in the very very distant past, for all the hackers tuning in)

hahha I can't believe #5! I never would have thought to use the word "password" as my password but it's definitely a popular one!

I really haven't made any New Years resolutions this year yet....
