Tips from Red Carpet Fashion Insider Linda Gaylard
Last week Chick Advisor got the inside scoop from Linda Gaylard, celebrity stylist and fashion expert, on easy-to-follow guidelines to help you achieve that glamorous red carpet style. (And with clients as gorgeous as Elisha Cuthbert and Kristen Booth, there’s no doubt you’ll want to take notes.)

ChickAdvisor: What are a few things to keep in mind when posing for a photograph?
Linda Gaylard: Most of the time you’ll be photographed from the waist up, so a great neckline and jewellery are very important. Avoid colours that are close to your skin tone, as your outfit will ‘disappear’.
CA: When putting together an outfit, should you build off one particular item?
LG: It always makes sense to start with the dress. The dress will determine the shoes; shoes influence the jewellery; jewellery influences the hair.
Aldo Honhart necklace ($20), Erickson Beamon Dune Swarovski crystal earrings ($390), Miriam Haskell Semi-Precious necklace ($1200)
CA: What’s your advice for women who have trouble accessorizing their outfits?
LG: My Rule of Thumb is--
Décolleté [bare shoulders and neck] = statement necklace and smallish earrings.
Not so much décolleté = smallish neckpiece with statement earrings.
Short dress = light strappy heels.
Long dress = choose a pair of shoes that will flow with the dress, colour- and style-wise.
[And] a pair of 3-inch strappy heels in an all-metal shade will go with just about everything.
Chinese Laundry Whirl Evening Sandals ($69), Jimmy Choo Glamour ($750), Nine West Proeze ($79)
CA: Is it wise to make a statement at big events?
LG: Making a statement is risky. Make the decision not only based on the look, but on your level of confidence in carrying it off.
And Gaylard's final tips for looking flawless all night long?
1. Body shapers are uncomfortable to wear. Good posture is better - it gives the stomach a flatter appearance and exudes confidence.
2. Carry an extra pair of shoes, just in case. (We like Damn Heels ballerina flats as a comfy alternative)
3. Keep an emergency stash of static guard, a tiny mending kit, and double-sided tape to fix a drooping hem or neckline.
4. Avoid hose and opt for leg makeup instead.
