Tips To Care For Feather Jewelry

What good is a new accessory if after just one wear it looks like it's on its last legs? Or maybe we should say last wings? We've been loving all the feather earrings and necklaces we've been seeing, but knowing how fragile they are some of you've asked how to protect plumes from damage. Here’s what we’ve found:

Store them...
Away from the sun—this will protecting from fading and heat damage.
Away from dust—feathers attract dust bugs, so keep them in a box or drawer.

What if…
They get wet? Use a dryer on low heat and gently fluff them back.
They get bent? Steam them until they are malleable, then gently bend them back.
They get mangled? Use a baby brush and sweep along the natural curve.
They get dried out? For real feathers, rub a drop of oil in your hands and lightly massage the feathers.
I want them to stay together? Use an aerosol hairspray to lightly coat them before wearing (this will only work for certain styles of earring and necklaces).

Use common sense: feathers are a delicate accessory and the better care you take of them the longer they will last.

I love the feather style! Always worried about it spreading apart though, so thanks for the tips! :)

If I was going to spray them I would try using a light finishing spray or a very fine misted shampoo - not my everyday "extra hold" stuff

Great stuff! This is really useful...especially since feather jewelry is so big right now!

This is so good to know, I know about polishing silver and gold, but feathers? Completely clueless.
