Trending in Fashion: The Peplum
As someone who has spent most of her shopping life trying to find items that conceal or reduce her wide hips, the sudden peplum trend leaves me scratching my head. If you're not familiar with the term 'peplum', chances are you may just not know what it's called, but you've definitely seen it before.

Now, I always assumed that peplum died in the 80's along with shoulder pads and acid wash denim. However, just as the shoulder pad came back with a vengeance a few seasons back, now the peplum has been resurrected and seems stronger than ever!

Designers like Yves Saint Laurent and Jason Wu have brought back the peplum in their Spring 2012 shows. Not only are we seeing the peplum in skirts or dress but also in jackets and tops.
Forever 21 Woven Peplum Top (C$25.90), Ribbon Striped Peplum Top (UK$20.00)
Since it's runway debut, I can't go into an H&M or Forever 21 without catching a glimpse of a peplum tee or skirt!
Alice + Olivia Vicky Peplum Dress (C$415.00), Kenzo Peplum Pencil Skirt (C$675.00)

I don't actually mind the peplum trend; on other people that is. Like I've said, the peplum draws attention to hips and that's not exactly on my to-do list. I say, if you have the confidence to rock a peplum, go right ahead lady! Just take a look at these celebs (Dianna Agron and Emma Stone) who strut it in a peplum!
What do you think of the peplum trend? Would you or do you wear it?

I agree with the fitting issue. I think the best peplums are done with perfectly fitted silhouettes and fabrics that can hold the ruffle and not look limp. Especially on the tops. Diana Agron's top is way too unstructured for a peplum as is the pink top with the black fitted pants on the runway. The silvery gray runway look with cutaway pants and hat-- I love that top with 3/4 length sleeves. It's all in the fit and the fabric.
I can't wear them (I have big hips too Alex) so maybe if you're like a tomboy figure and quite slim. Definitely harder to wear if you're curvy.
I think that peplum looks really classy - when done right. I agree that while on the lower half of the body, it may accentuate your hips, if the hemline hits right at the hipbone and is slightly flared out from that point, it can help to streamline your body.
I bought a couple cute halter tops,,got home and noticed they were like this..i rocked it tho :)

I like it but not sure it will suit me...
I guess it depends on how it fits you and how you pair it. The model wearing the blue one with the silver pants seems to be pulling it off well. |
