Voyage to Titanic's Sink Site on 100th Anniversary: Respectful or Rude?
At least two cruises are planned for April 2012, retracing RMS Titanic's fateful journey and stopping at the final resting place of the doomed ocean liner in the wee hours of April 15. Over 1500 people died after the ship collided with an iceberg in 1912.
Critics are denouncing it as nothing more than "disaster voyeurism" and disrespectful to Titanic's victims, survivors, and their families. The organizers tout the occasion as a respectful memorial and say the sailings are nearly sold out.
What do you think? Is this a respectful way to honour the dead? Or is it historical rubbernecking for tourists and a cheap cash grab for cruise companies? Would you be interested in participating?

While they are probably using the celebrity of the Titanic tragedy as a way to grab some cash, I still don't think it's disrespectful. Every year people visit various war memorials around the world, Ground Zero, etc. to pay their respects and see a little piece of history, and no one says that is disrespectful. The only reason more people haven't already visited the site is just because it's difficult to get to! |
