Are you a fan of Mindy Kaling's character Kelly Kapoor on The Office? We love her ability to be a hyper version of the annoying co-worker who is slightly self-obsessed, knows too much about celebrities and finds any way to cause drama. It's so spot on we're thankful we don't actually have to work with her. You may also be a fan of her style on the show, which, considering her character is fairly obsessed with fashion, has had some odd missteps along the way (that just made us love her more).

Lesser fans may not be aware that Kaling has also written and directed episodes of the show making her a comedy triple threat. Now, add book author to her list of accomplishments. On November 1, Kaling's book of essays Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? hits newsstands. If you follow her short quips on her Twitter, you know she's good at one liners, and from the excerpt on Scrbd she's also good at pointing out truths in longer form. Here are some of our favourites.

On rules that will make your life better:

Pancakes are a dead end. If I looked back on my life and saw the number of days that were a total wash because I had pancakes for breakfast, it would shock you. Sure, they taste about a thousand times better than the boring “Iron Man Health Scramble” you should be eating, but it is so not worth it, ever. Eating pancakes for breakfast leads to an immediate post-breakfast nap, followed by waking up in the middle of the afternoon feeling disgusted with myself, but still unable to motivate to do anything. Pancakes lead to lost weekends, like Trainspotting.

On the perks of writing for The Office:

Very recently I was out on script for The Office for a week. "Out on script" refers to when writers are sent off on their own to write a first draft of an episode of the show.
It is an amazing time, basically paid and sanctioned hooky. This means that instead of showering, dressing, and coming into work every day, I’m allowed to laze around my house in a giant T-shirt and no pants, go shopping, and go to trendy cardio classes with my fun, unemployed friends. Obviously this is the best time ever.

On how easy it is for guys to be stylish:

Being a guy is so easy. A little Kiehl’s, a little Bumble and Bumble, a peacoat, a pair of Chuck Taylors, and you’re hot.Here’s my incredibly presumptuous guide to being an awesome guy,inside and out (mostly out, for who am I to instruct you on inner improvement?). (Let me say here that if you’re some kind of icono-clastic dude who goes by the beat of your own drummer, you will find this insufferable. I totally respect that. I would never want you to stop wearing your skinny jeans and straw hat. I mean it!)

On why she just doesn't get the allure of one-night stands:

Ultimately, it comes down to this: How embarrassing would it be for me to be talking to a detective at a precinct after you tried to rape and murder me in my home, and not be able to tell them your name or any information about you because we were having a one-night stand? I’ve seen Law & Order: SVU, I know how it works.
